Well, we’re here! Unfortunately, the flag pole blocks our view a bit… but if I lean to the right, I can sort of see the pitcher’s mound… :)

I’m at Grand Central, waiting to meet Scott and take the subway to Yankee Stadium.
The Red Sox are leading the Yankees, 4-0, at the midway point of the second inning. Hurrah! With Pedro Martinez on the mound, hopefully that lead will hold! It would be great for the Sox to have momentum going into tomorrow’s game, because…
Tomorrow afternoon, I’m going to Yankee Stadium for the second time in my life. (The first time, the Yanks beat the Sox 6-5 on a bottom-of-the-ninth, two-out home run by Mel Hall.) I’m going with fellow Boston fan Scott from work, and I plan to wear Red Sox colors in the form of a red American flag shirt — that way, I can support my team in the Bronx without essentially wearing a shirt that says “BEAT ME UP.” :)

The Yankees lose again, the Red Sox win again (in 10 innings), and lo and behold, despite losing 2 of 3 at Fenway last weekend, the Sox are within three games of the Yanks!!!
It looks like Joe Torre may have been right when he said “other games,” and not necessarily the Boston-New York showdowns, would decide the course of the AL East race.
Then again, if New York will just lose again to Toronto tomorrow, the Red Sox will enter this weekend’s three-game series just 2 1/2 games back, and thus will have a chance to take the division lead if they sweep! Who’d have thunk it? (By the way, I’m going to Saturday’s game with a friend from work. More on that as it gets closer.)
What’s more, the Sox are tied for the wild-card lead again, as the Mariners also lost today. What a great day in baseball! :)

Yankees 8, Red Sox 4, middle of the 8th inning.
UPDATE: Well, that’s better: the Red Sox came back with two outs in the bottom of the 8th and scored three runs off Jeff Nelson and Mariano Rivera. Now it’s 8-7, and — if the Sox can hold the Yanks scoreless in the top of the 9th — all they need in the bottom of the 9th is one run (or, ideally, two runs) off an already-tired and not-at-all-sharp Rivera. Cross your fingers!
ANOTHER UPDATE: Can Congress please pass a law that makes it illegal for Byung-hun Kim to pitch against the Yankees? He just gave up a two-run home run to Jorge Posada, and now it’s 10-7 Yankees going into the bottom of the 9th. Again: dammit.
FINAL UPDATE: Yankees 10, Red Sox 7, final. Well, hopefully the Sox can win tomorrow — beating Roger Clemens in his last regular-season appearing at Fenway Park is a must — and take the series, 2-1. But a sweep would have been nice. Really nice. Alas…
Now my attention turns to college football. Go Trojans!

I have big plans for this first day of the holiday weekend. Yup. I plan to sit around the apartment in my underwear watching sports all day. :) (Sorry, was that too much information?)
First, starting right now, we have the Red Sox vs. the Yankees in the second game of their crucial three-game series at Fenway. (The Sox kicked Yankee butt yesterday. Yee-ah!) Then, at 6:00 PM Eastern, it’s time for a nationally televised college football showdown between two teams with national-championship aspirations: #6-ranked Auburn vs. my alma mater, #8-ranked USC.
Later, at 8:10 PM, there’s another big college football game between defending national champion Ohio State (ranked #2) and traditional Pac-10 power Washington (ranked #17), home of my friend and ex-roommate Dave. I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch that one, though… I may be in a car en route to Newington. (My parents are coming down here this evening, giving a pair of friends from France — who are crashing in the apartment for the next two weeks — a ride here from the airport, and then bringing me home for Sunday and Monday.)
Anyway… GO RED SOX! GO TROJANS! And uh, go Huskies. :)
The Red Sox won again Sunday; they’re one victory away from a sweep of the AL West-leading Mariners!

Why, oh why, must the Red Sox suck so? I mean, I don’t mean to be overly demanding here, but generally when you’re playing head-to-head against the team with which you are competing for the final playoff spot, it helps to win at least half of your games, ideally more, rather than losing every night.
And to think, I bought tickets to the Red Sox-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium next month, figuring I’d be watching baseball’s greatest rivals play in the midst of a heated pennant race. Now the Sox are all of 7 1/2 games behind the Yankees (and 2 games out of the wild card spot).
