The Phyllo Creation
Posted by on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Thanks to everyone who recommended different dishes that incorporate phyllo dough and curry. I ended up creating a samosa-like dish with onion, ground turkey and a grated potato flavored with curry and ginger inside phyllo triangles. I paired it with some watermelon, sauteed zucchini and onion and a salad (basic greens with garbanzo beans, artichoke hearts, tomato, celery and green peppers). Oh, and milk. :)

My next recipe challenge is finding a tasty vegetarian meal that won’t break the bank or leave me hungry in two hours. Any suggestions? Find mine after the jump.

Brendan and I enjoyed a spinach and chicken pie the other night and I have a bunch of leftover phyllo dough. Anyone have a good recipe that uses phyllo? Extra credit if it includes curry!

March for Babies!
Posted by on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 9:39 am

Brendan, Loyette and I will be walking in the Knoxville March for Babies, sponsored by the March of Dimes, later this month. The march raises money for research to help babies born with health problems. (Here’s a more detailed blurb about it.) If you want to make a donation to support us, and more importantly the research, you can do so here.

Our troops rock!
Posted by on Thursday, July 19, 2007 at 1:09 pm

Thanks to everyone who has donated money to help us ship packages to our troops serving in the Middle East! Any money we get through the end of this month is going into our “send the troops cool stuff” budget. If you’re interested in sending stuff to the troops yourself, check out the Books For Soldiers website.

Our latest care package is heading to a soldier stationed north of Baghdad. Aside from yummy snacks, he’s also getting a couple of magazines, season four DVDs of CSI, a couple of battery powered hand-held fans (w/ batteries of course) because it’s in the 110s over there during the day, and toys like a nerf football and an inflatable beach ball.

There are lots of good military blogs out there that reflect the sacrifices that our armed forces make when they are called to duty. One of my favorites is Chaplain Kline’s blog. He has some amazing pictures.

Anyway, here’s the PayPal link again:

Fancy Parmesan cheese ideas?
Posted by on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 8:53 pm

I designed my kitchen in Knoxville so that I’m maximizing my counter space to facilitate my goal of cooking at home more. I bought a block of reggiano parmesan cheese to use in a recipe this week and discovered that a) I don’t need that much for my recipe and b) I better figure out how to use this $10 wedge of cheese. So, does anyone have some fantastically delicious recipes that call for fancy parmesan cheese?

Harry Potter leakers threatened with tar, feathers
Posted by on Monday, May 14, 2007 at 8:57 pm

JK Rowling has asked those with knowledge of the plot of her final book not to disclose the details to the public.

Never underestimate the wrath of disgruntled Harry Potter nerds.

“If Harry dies, we don’t want to know about it until J.K. Rowling decides to tell us,” Leaky Cauldron webmaster Melissa Anelli wrote. “And if you decide to tell us before that, you’ll incur the wrath of a staff of almost 200, most of whom have been waiting almost 10 years for these final revelations and can NEVER get back the moment you rob by spoiling them.

“That’s some wrath right there. We own pitchforks, hot wax and feathers. And we’re not afraid to use them.”

Throat cancer linked to oral sex
Posted by on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 11:37 am

Ew.

People who had one to five oral-sex partners in their lifetime had approximately a doubled risk of throat cancer compared with those who never engaged in this activity - and those with more than five oral-sex partners had a 250% increased risk.

There was an even stronger link between oral sex and throat cancers clearly caused by HPV-16 (those tumours that tested positive for the strain). People with more than five oral sex partners had a 750% increased risk of these HPV-16-caused cancers.

It just goes to show that before you put something in your mouth, you oughta know where it’s been.

On a policy level, this study lends scientific support to legislative efforts to mandate an HPV vaccine for school-aged children, male and female, given the dire consequences of not doing so. While some have argued that such vaccinations condone promiscuity or alternatively, constitute yet another example of the excesses of the nanny state, burgeoning evidence linking HPV directly to cancers should reinforce the necessity of the vaccine as a means of promoting public health and reducing future health care costs.
