Rhyming Judge Take 2
Posted by on Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 5:30 pm

A case against Eminem was dismissed by Circuit Judge Deborah Servitto who wrote, “The lyrics are stories no one would take as fact/they’re an exaggeration of a childish act. It is therefore this Court’s ultimate position/that Eminem is entitled to summary disposition.”

And now for something completely different…

NYC homeless guy spends his days (and most of his money) at Starbucks using a refurbished desktop he found in the trash to surf using Starbuck’s wireless… it’s just a little sad.

And now for something completely different….

A woman leads Muslim prayer in NY, and 2 media outlets carry the same story, with wildly different quotes from one protestor

CNN quotes Nussrah as saying,Wadud was not representative of Muslims.
“She is tarnishing the whole Islamic faith,” he said.

The Chicago Tribune quotes the exact same protester…”These people do not represent Islam,” said the clearly furious Nussruh. “If this was an Islamic state, this woman would be hanged, she would be killed, she would be diced into pieces.”
(I think you have to register to read the whole article, but I cut and pasted the whole comment that was made)

Clearly a different message… What gives?

Red, White and Blue

Everyday I am glad I was born in the US, and that I have freedoms available to me that people living in fundamentalist countries don’t. Today I stumbled across two more reasons to love the US, as imperfect as it may seem sometimes.

An Iranian blogger was sentenced to 14 years in prison

Women activists in Iraq are being assasinated by fundamentalists, and women in the street are being threatened and attacked for wearing western clothes instead of the higab [Islamic headscarf].

A very conservative friend sent this to me…

ODE TO INCLUSIVENESS

Republicans, I hate them all.
I hate them short. I hate them tall.
I hate them in the morning light.
I hate them in the dark of night.
I hate their dogs. I hate their cats.
I hate their sniveling Nazi brats.
With righteous anger I do seethe.
I hate the very air they breathe.
But most of all. I hate like sin
The many elections that they win.
– Arlene N. Heath
Seattle, Washington

my friend and I are unsure if this was written to be ironic, but it’s damn funny anyway!

I just wanted to add- I don’t agree with this, one of my parents is Republican, so that would mean I am self hating… besides that fact, I don’t hate people for their political choices.

Supreme Court strikes again

The Supreme Court rejected a challenge to Roe v Wade. Apparently McCorvey was attempting to have the original case reheard due to changed circumstances.

Risk factors

This is a highly amusing, probably inaccurate way of determining if you’ll be called on in class.

more politics please!
Posted by on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 5:32 pm

I had a very interesting discussion at lunch today about the inability of either the Republican or Democrat parties to adequately address religious and moral values, i.e. social values as well as abortion/gay beliefs.
I just found this speech given by a Professor at Oklahoma City University- I’m sure that many people won’t agree with it. But I think he has some interesting points and valid frustrations, even though I don’t feel the professor was particularly thoughtful about possible changes. (like additional political parties)
(I know it won’t and can’t happen, so no snarking about that thank you)
Enjoy!

I just couldn’t resist

I know it’s a bit late, but I just had to share.

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address fell on the same day.

As Air America Radio pointed out,

“It’s an ironic juxtaposition: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, and the other involves a groundhog.”

A Brazilian 9-year old is being scouted for European soccer teams, wow- I think soccer needs a no-minor in competition rule, like the Tara Lipinski rule that the Worlds competition has (noone under a certain age can compete- I think 16 years old?) Fortunately, it seems that this kid is going to have a childhood before going pro.

Stylish Charity

Did you love the fashion at the Golden Globes? (I didn’t watch)
Are you desperate to own anything Ewan McGregor touched? (I admit nothing!)
Or perhaps a whiff of William Shatner’s shoes will make you faint (I’m not judging you- just laughing hysterically)

Stars are donating their designer duds for the tsunami relief… the list of items for sale include Terri Hatcher’s dress (of Desperate Housewives and raunchy NFL commerical fame) going for a whopping $5,000… to poor Charlize Theorn, whose dress has 0 bids.
I’d feel better about this if I didn’t know that the celebrities get these dresses for free.

Solomon amendment injunction
Posted by on Friday, January 14, 2005 at 3:52 pm

I stumbled across this topic, and it seemed like most of the readers might take interest; one way or another ;)
So here’s the basics- many schools, in fact, most schools have some sort of anti-discrimination policy that employers must follow in order to interview on campus. The US military has a discriminatory policy against gays- and were excluded from campuses in the early 90’s.
Anyway, in 1994 Rep. Gerald Solomon, R-N.Y., sponsored an amendment that proposed to withhold Defense Department funding from any educational institution with a policy of denying or effectively preventing the military from obtaining entry to campuses, or access to students on campuses, for recruiting purposes. DENY OR PREVENT- that’s why colleges have the disclaimers and allow recuriters on campus.

But after the September 2001 terrorist attacks, the Department of Defense began applying “an informal policy of requiring not only access to campuses, but treatment equal to that accorded other recruiters.” so a lawsuit followed and here’s the court of appeals decision

Anybody else think this is wrong?

In determining if the Guantanamo Bay detainees will remain imprisoned, the military panels reviewing the cases are allowed to consider evidence collected through torture.

Breaking News

Now, I haven’t seen any news reports… but someone in Torts (shall remain unnamed) let out a gasp during class. Naturally inquisitive (or nosy, whatever) I asked what happened.. and she says-

Ty willingham was fired

Um, she’s a long-distance girlfriend
