Democratic debate shortly
Posted by on Monday, July 23, 2007 at 6:19 pm

The first DNC-sanctioned debate airs from The Citadel live at 7-9pm EDT on CNN. I’ll be watching.

NHC under scrutiny
Posted by on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 11:19 am

Following up on Brendan’s earlier post on how the NHC director received a reprimand for pointing out that forecasts might not nearly be as accurate as hoped due to the possibly of a satellite failure:

Today, word’s in from the Miami Herald that the NHC was inspected yesterday. In addition, “Meanwhile, for the first time, one of Proenza’s hurricane forecasters expressed public concern about some of Proenza’s actions since he took the job in January.

Lixion Avila, a lead forecaster and a center employee for more than 20 years, said he believes Proenza meant well but unintentionally has undermined public faith in hurricane forecasts.”

Money quote: “Reached Monday night, Proenza confirmed the surprise inspection, but — in a departure from his usual practice — he said little else.” I wonder why?

Asked if he believed his job was threatened by the NOAA inspection team and its mission, Proenza said:

“I await their finding and, hopefully, their support.””

It sounds to me as if Proenza knows his days are numbered.

Leopard about to be revealed
Posted by on Monday, June 11, 2007 at 1:08 pm

It is widely expected that most, if not all, of the main features of Leopard (OS X 10.5) are to be revealed at the WWDC keynote that just got underway. Best coverage is at MacRumors Live.

UPDATE: Apple has a list of features here.

judgement day…
Posted by on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 11:13 am

Whether or not I end up at NMSU next fall or head to Abilene Christian as I’m hoping, I’ll have big opportunities ahead of me.

My grades just came in (I finished my sophomore undergrad year). Relevant here: I scored 88 on the midterm for Consumers and the Law and finished with an A-, so my paper was done well. On my presentation (which involved hand-drawn illustrations of NM drunk driving laws), the delivery was good enough to merit second place for most outstanding presentation.

Sweet.

The season is underway

Just in: Subtropical Storm Andrea has formed.

UPDATE BY BRENDAN: Here’s a satellite view:

meanwhile, down south…
Posted by on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 3:34 am

I had one test yesterday, along with a paper due this Friday (that’s 95% done), and one test coming Thursday; I have two tests later today, at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM MDT (along with the 2:30 test I have a presentation at the same time).

That second final is my law class (Honors 385 for those in Las Cruces) which I’m working on now. The paper (on drunk driving) is supposed to be 12-15 pages long.

I’m still here (at 1:34) and on page 11. ;)

1:53 update: Page 12 (the last page), line 2. :)

2:25: Done.

111-86
Posted by on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 1:22 am

That’s the final score in the Warriors’ (42-40) series-clinching Game 6 win over the top-seeded Mavericks (who were 67-15); it’s the first time a #8 took out a #1 in a seven-game first round format.

Who saw THAT coming? I sure didn’t!

Legendary author dies
Posted by on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 12:08 am

Kurt Vonnegut, best known for Slaughterhouse-Five (1969), has died aged 84.

[12:37 update] NYTimes link now requires registration so I replaced it with the Fox News link.

[12:52 update] See the CNN post above. This will be an interesting commentary on the timing of breaking news alerts. That’s for sure. ;)

EDT underway

3:08 right now. What moniker should we use? “Spring forward” doesn’t seem appropriate as there are about ten more days prior to the equinox.

Weird weather
Posted by on Friday, January 26, 2007 at 4:36 pm

While Brendan may get lots of snow near the end of the weekend along with bitter cold (forecast here), an even stranger series of events is taking place in the Borderland.

You see, we don’t usually get snow. Not this often (some on Nov 29, Jan 2, Jan 5, and both Tuesday and Friday of this week, accumulating both times). Latest updates courtesy of KFOX Channel 14 out of El Paso.

It’s 41 degrees right now, after 33-36 this morning. Only one day this week has it been well beyond 50 degrees, but it’s supposed to get to seasonal normals in the next few days.

Bring on 60!

BCS playoffs? Next decade? Hopefully.
Posted by on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 12:13 pm

It looks like the BCS will not announce any significant changes to the postseason format until at least 2010, mostly due to the current television contracts structure.

Since university presidents were very averse in the past, I don’t see sentiment changing anytime soon. How many games like BSU-Oklahoma must we see? Hmmm?

2007 Macworld keynote about to begin
Posted by on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 12:05 pm

The best live coverage (auto-refreshing) may be found at MacRumors.

Apple should also have a stream of the event posted later today, as has been the case with previous keynotes.

The keynote was due to start at 9 a.m. PST (noon EST.)

Update | 12:15 | Nothing yet.

Update | 12:17 | Looks like we are underway.

12:29 | Apple’s iTV just announced; coverage at MacRumors; it’s $299

1:11 | Looks like the phone is the major announcement.

Now I’m 0-for-2!
Posted by on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 1:23 am

Pertinent info: I was born in Denver but raised in New Mexico. So I have a connection to Denver.

There are some days I just feel life isn’t fair…as my hometown Nuggets lost 101-96 to the Sacramento Kings despite 22 points from newly acquired Allan Iverson.

It has not been a good night. Alas.

It’s a thriller!
Posted by on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 12:59 am

The Phoenix Suns (whom I’ve adopted as my NBA team) are going into overtime at home tied at 127 (!) against the Washington (DC) Wizards.

The Wizards are 13-12 coming in; the Suns are riding a franchise-record 15-game win streak and sit atop the Pacific Division in the Western Conference at 18-6.

UPDATE | 11:00p | Diaw just made a layup to make it 129-127.

UPDATE | 11:01 | 131-128, Suns leading.

UPDATE | 11:02 | The Wizards’ Jamison just missed a field goal.

UPDATE | 11:04 | 131-132, Wizards leading, after two patient field goals. Phoenix taking a timeout.

UPDATE | 11:07 | Nash just made a three! Now 134-134. He has 39 pts, 12 ast, 3 rebs.
*oops* Now 134-136.

UPDATE | 11:08 | Arenas, the Wizards’ top scorer with 54, (!) just made a three of his own to push the lead to five.

UPDATE | 11:10 | Stoudemire made two free throws to cut the deficit to three at 136-139 with 22.6 left in OT.

UPDATE | 11:12 | 136-141.

UPDATE | 11:16 | Nash makes another three, now has 42, and it’s 139-142. C’mon!

FINAL UPDATE | 11:18 | Finished at 139-144, so the winning streak is finished.

Initial thoughts: Can Phoenix defend? And Arenas is establishing himself…I’m pretty sure he had 60 the other night!

NBA brawl: suspensions in
Posted by on Monday, December 18, 2006 at 5:08 pm

They ended up lighter than I expected. 15 games for ‘Melo, the maximum penalty of all involved.

I still stand by my original statement Friday night.
