Patriots/Giants game underway
Posted by on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 8:33 pm

Amidst the college bowl games, the potentially historic NFL game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants is currently underway.  The powers-that-be at the NFL conveniently came to their senses earlier this week, and it is being broadcast on both NBC and CBS along with the much-maligned NFL Network.  It’s the same feed for all three, so it doesn’t really matter which one you pick (commercials are the same too, so you’re stuck with the same annoying commercials, no flipping between, although you could swap to the Alamo Bowl to watch JoePa’s 500th game).

Despite speculation that one or both teams might rest their starters, it appears all the big guns are out for both teams, and it’s paid off so far for the Giants, as they have a 7-0 lead part way through the first quarter.

UPDATE: It’s been a battle so far but the Giants are still on top 21-16 thanks to some great plays and a few mistakes by the Patriots as we go to the half.

Bryant Gumbel has no business doing NFL play-by-play.

I’d love to actually have the NFL Network, but sheesh, he’s awful.

  2. gahrie Says:

This year I had come to the conclusion that there is nothing about the NFL worse than listening to Tony Kornheiser doing color commentary.

Tonight I got the chance to listen to Bryant Gumbel do play by play.

    I was wrong.

  3. Jim Hu Says:

Meanwhile it’s 14-14 in the Alamo Bowl. A&M’s Mike Goodson scores two TDs and gives Penn State one by fumbling deep in his own red zone.

I’ve never cheered for the NY Giants in my life. I’m cheering for them now.

Speaking about nothing about the NFL being worse than Tony Kornheiser or Bryant Gumbel, anyone else stunned by the sheer lack of consistency in the officiating in tonight’s game? It seems like to officials are looking the other way when the Patriots commit penalties (face mask against Burress early in the game. Not penalizing Brady for delay of game). I always wonder if there is inexperience at work in these kinds of games or something else.

  5. JO Says:

It will be nice to see the Pats lose to the REAL Manning in a few weeks.

  6. Andrew Says:

Stealing a line from TMQ, in hell there are dozens of 1080p HD big screen TVs, and they are all tuned to Falcons vs. Dolphins with Gumbel and Kornheiser doing play-by-play and color commentary.

    Andrew:

And Chris Myers doing sideline commentary. (have you seen him on HDTV close ups?)

  8. gahrie Says:

That’s Chris Meyers…..apparently Chris Myers is an entirely different guy…

  9. Mad Max, Esquire Says:

I think the Patriots would trounce the Colts. I think the only scenario where the Patriots don’t make it to the SuperBowl is a windy, blustery day in New England with the Jacksonville Jaguars running the ball down the Patriots’ throats. Short of that, I think the Pats will play Dallas in the SuperBowl.

And I, unfortunately, will have to cheer on the God forsaken Cowboys. At least I like Tony Romo and Wade Phillips more than Tom Brady and the Dark Lord.
