Sarah LeFoll’s family has started a scholarship in her honor, which will be awarded annually to one Newington High School senior who plans to attend a four-year college to pursue a major in Fine Arts or Performing Arts. The first scholarship will be given out next Thursday. Detailed information, including how to donate to the fund, is after the jump.

Sarah’s family is pleased to announce the formation of a memorial scholarship in her honor at Newington High in her hometown of Newington, Connecticut.

The decision to create this annual scholarship award was a simple one. Many members of her family and her friends came to me independent of one another to express their desire to celebrate her life and her love for the arts in this way.

This year a $500 scholarship will be awarded to one NHS senior, who plans to attend a four year college to pursue a major in Fine Arts or Performing Arts. Selection is based on school and community participation in the arts for at least 3 years, character, and submission of a brief essay. Financial need will be given some consideration.

We feel that an essay question will give us an opportunity to find someone whose passion for the arts in some way echoes Sarah’s own drive and desires. We all know how she loved to create; drawing, photography, poetry, songwriting, videography, choreography, and of course the greatest of all, theatre and music. These have been the stuff of her dreams.

It is our profound hope that you, her friends and the companions of her many adventures will help us to make this scholarship sustainable from year to year in whatever way works best for you. We also hope that we might be able to expand a little in the future to include the donation of musical instruments or theatre equipment to NHS in her honor. To that end we have established the Sarah E. LeFoll Memorial Fund at Webster Bank. We have not yet completed the steps to file as a non-profit organization yet, so this year your donations will not be tax deductible. We hope to have that in place before next year.
