Bun Run!
Posted by on Monday, May 7, 2007 at 3:01 am

Defying a threatened crackdown, two dozen Zahm Hall residents streaked twice through LaFortune Student Center just after midnight Monday, delighting a large crowd of onlookers (both male and female) as they successfully completed another edition of the semiannual “Bun Run.”

I attended the event thinking there might be a clash between naked Domers and campus police, which would have been quite a newsworthy spectacle. Nothing of the sort happened, but it was still an entertaining exhibition, complete with a naked dude on a skateboard.

The first time they came through, at 12:06 AM, a total of 24 streakers made the run up the stairs from the basement, through the first-floor lounge and lobby, past the Huddle and out the door. They then apparently re-entered the building on the lower level, and 22 of them repeated their naked run past the enthusiastic crowd two minutes later. I’m not sure what happened to the other two streakers, though there were reports of NDSP officers “outside every entrance,” so it’s possible 2 of the original 24 were apprehended on their way back into the building. I don’t know, though. There was no visible police presence inside LaFortune itself, at least not on the first floor where the Bun Run(s) took place.

Lisa took video of both runs, which can be seen (with the streakers’ faces obscured) after the jump. Warning: nudity!!!

Because I don’t want to be responsible for getting anyone in trouble, I used an iMovie plugin called Hide to conceal the faces of those who didn’t cover them up themselves. Not real sophisticated, but it got the job done. Anywhere a face appeared distinct enough that I thought university authorities might be able to identify it using the video, I obscured it.

I did not, however, censor anything other than faces, so this video is most definitely not safe for work, as it contains lots of male nudity, including full frontal. (Especially the latter part.)

Again… contains nudity! Parental discretion advised! NSFW! Okay, you’ve been duly warned…

Heh. Ah, the silliness.

(Don’t blame me for, ahem, where the camera is pointing in some of those shots. Lisa shot the video! Heh.)

Thanks to the commenter who suggested the Bun Run when I asked my audience for advice about Notre Dame experiences not to be missed. I’m not normally interested in looking at naked guys (and the event would be much improved if, like the UCLA Undie Run*, it featured both sexes), but the silliness and spectacle of it all was definitely worth witnessing. (Though I may be scarred for life by the fact that I had to go through that video frame-by-frame to block out the faces… ugh.)

*Yes, I just voluntarily praised something about UCLA. Again, ugh.

hahahah thanks for that, Brendan… just what I needed before going to sleep.

Haha, the video did make me laugh despite the expressions of total confusion that were inadvertently being formed by my face.

  2. Lisa Says:

There was one runner who decided to go into the Huddle Mart for a quarter dog after the first run, so he may not have realized they were running a second time and missed it.

  3. Rebecca Loy Says:

You made Lisa take the video? HAHAHAHAHA.

All the news that’s fit to video! Thanks for the coverage.

    lol… thanks for the entertainment

  6. Lisa Says:

He didn’t make me Becky. We both were taking video. I think he just used mine because my camera takes a higher quality video. The one posted here has actually been downgraded, so the size and quality aren’t as good as the original. Besides, now I have my own video footage of the Bun Run for posterity.

edsbs.com linked to this post, Brendan. Nice work. Maybe this will get them off the MBA Tailgate dancing video for a while.

Nicely done Brendan. That was the perfect way to start my day before a morning exam!

  9. 40 year old virgin Says:

You know how I know you’re gay? You film naked dudes.

  10. uscroger Says:

Better be gay than a 40 y/o virgin.

  11. Anonymous Says:

uscroger - you are talking to ND students. I think plenty of them are headed directly towards being 40 year old virgins and think that is way better than being gay. Just saying :)

  12. Anonymous Says:

I like that. Because I know that you don’t have chlamydia. And that shit is everywhere.

  13. 40 year old virgin Says:

Hey Roger, you know how I know you’re gay? You have sex with dudes when girls turn you down.

I think I founded the Zahm Bun Run the spring semester of 1996 (my last semester) and I’m trying to confirm. When I was an undergrad there was no Zahm Bun Run, there was a Keenan Bun Run. The rector of Keenan decided to put an end to the Keenan Bun Run my last semester. He either locked all the doors and/or had the RAs block all of the exits, and for the first time during my time at Notre Dame, there was no bun run. The next day I rallied a handful of guys (10 or less) and I had the guys on the first floor in the room facing Keenan blast the Macarena. We began thwhat I believe was the first Zahm Bun Run (although we didn’t call it that) by performing the Macarena in the buff in front of Keenan. We then proceeded to LaFortune, which was packed given that it was finals week. From there we headed back to the best dorm on campus. So I request everyone’s assistance in determining if there was a gap between the Bun Run that I initiated in the spring of 1996 and the next bun run. The participants were, oddly enough, seniors and freshman, so I am hopeful that the very next year one of those freshman continued the tradition that I began. I figure as long as the next bun run occurred no later than later than 1999 (when the freshman from my year graduated), then I can rightfully claim that I was their inspiration. Any insight as to the first date you recall there being a Zahm Bun Run would be much appreciated.
