Basilica damage: initial photos
Posted by on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 11:22 pm

I have many more photos of today’s storm to share, but the 3L Dinner just ended, and now people are heading out to the Backer to celebrate… so I don’t have much time. To tide you over, here’s a before & after shot of the destroyed spire:

The pictures are taken from slightly different angles, but you can clearly see that the large spire at left is… GONE! What happened to it? Well…

Pretty amazing. I don’t know how strong the winds were, but they must have been pretty impressive to cause that. (I do believe they were purely straight-line winds, though, blowing west to east. No tornado here.)

Like I said, I’ll post more later (i.e., tomorrow), but now I’m off to the Backer!

P.S. Here are a couple more quick storm-damage photos:

Here’s the WSBT article.

Is it any wonder that the day Jerry Falwell died, the church started crumbling?

Brendan, I was caught in the worst of the storm right at St. Joseph’s Lake, not far from the Basillica. I was running to get shelter, so i didn’t look up at the sky, although some guys from Sorin said they saw a funnel cloud form right over the Grotto and over the Basilica, although it never touched down.

But let me tell you, the debris that was flying in the air was large and it was not flying in a straight direction–it was most definately traveling in a circular direction…I definately had a good look at that.

One last storm before the IT leaves the SB.

The basilica steeple comparison picture is like a highlights magazine quiz. Can you tell what is different between these two pictures ? What would Doofus do and what would Duncan do ?

I don’t think the wind was strong enough to knock that over. By the looks of the damage, it looks like Goku and Vegeta were training on South Quad and someone got thrown into the Basilica steeple.

For the love of God, it’s Goofus and Gallant.

whatev ! sorry I don’t have a highlights subscription anymore. It’s been 15 years since I held one of those magazines.

    Condor, you make me laugh.

I’m just amazed at how quickly the clean up crews were out after the initial damage was done. I mean, we got to campus maybe 25 minutes after the storm rolled through and there was already a fork lift clearing trees and you could hear the chainsaws by the grotto.

Not only do you screw up the Goofus and gallant reference but you also bring up that piece of trash Anime dragonball z? Lord, i still hate my sophmore year roomate for watching that stupid show all the time. It was such a releif when he got kicked out after first quarter that year…
