From the department of jokes that write themselves…

The hottest ticket in D.C.

The AP has the guest list for tonight’s White House state dinner in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. In case anyone was wondering, Professor Kelley is not on it. :)

UPDATE: On a more serious Kelley-related note:

Back on March 5, several top Justice Department officials were summoned for an emergency meeting at the White House. On the agenda: Going over “what we are going to say” about why eight U.S. attorneys had been summarily fired.

The reason for the urgency: principal associate deputy attorney general William Moschella was testifying before the House Judiciary Committee the next day.

Deputy White House counsel William Kelley sent an e-mail over to Justice early in the afternoon, saying that he had “been tasked” with pulling the meeting together, and that “we have to get this group together with some folks here asap.”

The meeting was held at the White House later that day. And who did Kelley mean by “some folks here”? Well, among others, Karl Rove — the White House’s chief political operative, and the man who may very well have set the unprecedented dismissals in motion in the first place.

But after the coaching session, Moschella went out and told Congress that there was no significant White House involvement in the firings, as far as he knew.

Michael Isikoff writes in Newsweek: “Now some investigators are saying that Rove’s attendance at the meeting shows that the president’s chief political advisor may have been involved in an attempt to mislead Congress…”

Andrea?

As predicted yesterday, a strong low pressure system has formed off the Carolinas, and it could become Subtropical Storm Andrea. (Hat tip: Patrick Cullen.)

Dr. Jeff Masters thinks not, however: “The storm will start to develop thunderstorm activity and a warm core, but will probably not have time to become fully subtropical and become Subtropical Storm Andrea.” And Margie Kieper is equally skeptical: “In spite of a thread on a well-known forum that mentions the A-word, and currently has over 9000 views, we won’t in all likelihood be springing into summer, at least hurricane-wise, in the Atlantic basin this week.”

Maybe not, but there mere threat of Andrea was enough to force me to officially create my “2007 Hurricane Season” category. :) Heeeere we go…

In a galaxy far, far away…

Scientists have spotted the brightest supernova ever seen. (Hat tip: Dan Port.) But perhaps it should be called a “super-dupernova” or something? Anyway, cool. Er, hot, actually. Very hot.

More here and here.

Deathly guesses

Speaking of Harry Potter (as I do in my Spider-Man 3 review), Becky — having just finished re-reading books 1-6 — is blogging about her guesses for what will happen in book 7, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She concludes, “I know there are other Harry Potter nerds out there. Got any brilliant suspicions of your own?” Well?

[UPDATE: Bumped to top (from 5/6, 12:18am) because Becky, anxious for more feedback, made me bump it… and if Becky ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy! -ed.]

Dear Federal Rules of Evidence,

I hate you. Please go away.

Bun Run!
Posted by on Monday, May 7, 2007 at 3:01 am

Defying a threatened crackdown, two dozen Zahm Hall residents streaked twice through LaFortune Student Center just after midnight Monday, delighting a large crowd of onlookers (both male and female) as they successfully completed another edition of the semiannual “Bun Run.”

I attended the event thinking there might be a clash between naked Domers and campus police, which would have been quite a newsworthy spectacle. Nothing of the sort happened, but it was still an entertaining exhibition, complete with a naked dude on a skateboard.

The first time they came through, at 12:06 AM, a total of 24 streakers made the run up the stairs from the basement, through the first-floor lounge and lobby, past the Huddle and out the door. They then apparently re-entered the building on the lower level, and 22 of them repeated their naked run past the enthusiastic crowd two minutes later. I’m not sure what happened to the other two streakers, though there were reports of NDSP officers “outside every entrance,” so it’s possible 2 of the original 24 were apprehended on their way back into the building. I don’t know, though. There was no visible police presence inside LaFortune itself, at least not on the first floor where the Bun Run(s) took place.

Lisa took video of both runs, which can be seen (with the streakers’ faces obscured) after the jump. Warning: nudity!!!
