Florida is one win away from a repeat national championship in men’s college basketball, and if they do it, Sports Illustrated writer and USC alumnus Arash Markazi will finally break the “Trojan Curse” in Living Room Times basketball pools.
But if the Ohio State hoopsters can do what the Buckeye football team was unable to do back in January, namely beat the Gators, it will mean another disappointment at the wire for a USC contestant in a Times pool — and a championship for Scott Robertson, a graduate student at the University of Utah.
Robertson currently leads the pool with 389 points out of a possible 452. Markazi is second with 384. Both of those totals already break Brian Kiolbasa’s all-time men’s pool points record of 362, and whoever wins will end up with more than 400 points, something that has previously only been done in women’s pools.
Markazi is just the latest in a long line of Trojans to enter the final stages of a Living Room Times pool with a chance to win it. Last year, former USC student Victoria Lopez would have won the women’s pool if Duke had won the title game, but Maryland pulled off the second-biggest comeback in the women’s NCAA championship history, giving the pool title to Rick Boeckler. The year before that, in the 2005 men’s pool, USC grad Andrew Long would have won if Illinois had beaten North Carolina in the championship game, but the Tar Heels’ narrow victory gave Kiolbasa the win. And in 2001, Mike Wiser, then a sophomore at ‘SC, appeared to have the women’s pool won, but a second-half comeback by Notre Dame propelled the Irish over Purdue and relegated Wiser to second place.
As an interesting aside, Markazi would be in first place right now if he had correctly predicted USC’s run to the Sweet Sixteen, but he picked the Trojans to lose in the first round to Arkansas. However, it would not ultimately matter to the outcome of the pool, since the championship game is worth 25 points and Markazi’s lack of faith in his Trojans only cost him 12 points. Regardless, he would win the pool if Florida wins Monday, and lose if they lose.
Markazi’s bracket is perfect since the second round. In fact, he has not made a mistake since the USC-Texas game. Only he and P.J. Wanecski can boast such complete second- and third-weekend success. (Robertson’s bracket had North Carolina bowing out in the Sweet Sixteen.)
All of the current top six — Robertson, Markazi, Mike Marchand (379 points), Randy Styles (374), Ginny Zak (371) and Wanecski (366) — predicted a Florida-OSU title game, except Zak, who thought it would be Kansas-OSU. All picked Ohio State to win the championship except Markazi, who predicted a title for the Gators. But Joe Resper and Kendra Krauss, tied for eighth place with 362 points, also picked Florida over OSU in the title game, so they’ll jump ahead of everyone except Markazi and Robertson if the Gators win. (John McBride, who picked Georgetown over Florida, is currently in seventh with 365 points, but actually cannot finish better than 13th because he will be leapfrogged by several contestants regardless of who wins.)
McBride was mathematically eliminated by Ohio State’s win Saturday, as was Ryan Dalidowitz. Florida’s win eliminated Zak and Sören Hammerschmidt.
