I passed the MPRE!
Posted by on Monday, April 9, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Hurrah! I’m officially ethical!

I would say “that’s one less thing to be stressed out about,” but to be honest, I hadn’t given it a moment’s thought since the day I took it. However, during the 45-second window between a) realizing that my score was available and b) finding out what it was — a window made longer by the fact that I first had to Google around to figure out what score my state requires, which I had entirely forgotten — yeah, during that 45-second window, I was mildly nervous. ;)

Anyway… one really easy bar exam down, one really hard bar exam to go.

P.S. If you’re wondering, I needed an 85, and I got an 87. I guess maybe I should have been a little nervous! But hey, a win’s a win, survive and advance, right? :)

P.P.S. I think I’ll put a line on my resume that proudly proclaims, “I’m 87 percent ethical!” Would that be a good or bad idea? Hehe.

  1. Brian Foster Says:

Bad idea — the MPRE tops out at 150. So you’re really only 58% ethical, *and* you’d be misrepresenting your qualifications to practice law before you even get admitted to the bar. :)

  2. Brendan Loy Says:

Wait, so I’m only required to be 56.7% ethical to practice law in Colorado? Sweet!!

(BTW, for those who aren’t in the loop, there will be a forthcoming post soon explaining, or attempting to explain, why the hell I’m taking the bar in Colorado.)

  3. Brian Foster Says:

Oh, good. I was going to ask. :)

  4. Brendan Loy Says:

Upon further consideration, “scores are scaled and range from 50 to 150, with an average of approximately 100.” So really, I’m only 37% ethical. And yet I passed! God bless the legal profession.

(I now feel the need to do a buzzkill on the silliness and point out, lest someone take this too seriously, that: 1) as I understand it, the scaled scores do not actually equate to the percentage of correct answers; 2) even if they did, that wouldn’t actually translate to a personal “ethics percentage”; and 3) even if it did, the reason I didn’t do better is because, having been told by numerous people that it isn’t that hard to pass, and that you don’t get any extra credit for getting a high score above and beyond what’s needed to pass the MPRE, I didn’t study very hard at all for it, choosing instead to focus on more important things like working on my Electoral College paper, getting ready for my NCAA Pools, and of course, blogging. :)

    I daresay I’m actually quite ethical. :)

P.S. Let it be known that Brian Foster is sitting across the room from me, but instead of actually conversing, we’re exchanging comments on my blog. Heh.

Let it also be known that I may, at my discretion, delete this post once it scrolls off the homepage, so as to prevent there being a permanent, archival, Google-able record of the fact that I got a below-average score on the professional responsibility exam. :)

  6. Alasdair Says:

Ummmm … isn’t it already too late ?

  7. Andrew Says:

    Google archives?

  8. Brendan Loy Says:

Not really. As long as I put something different at the same URL (rather than deleting it), the Google Cache will eventually be overwritten. Now, the Internet Archive is a different story, but that’s much less likely to be something that people would casually stumble upon.

“Let it be known that Brian Foster is sitting across the room from me, but instead of actually conversing, we’re exchanging comments on my blog. Heh.”

Well of course — talking in person is way too civil.

  10. Terry Says:

Of course if someone was a real ass, they could just mirror the text of the post on their own blog permanently, right?

  11. Sean Says:

You have to study to be ethical?

  12. ScottF Says:

Brendan, Isn’t your score really just showing what you know is legally ethical by Colorado law and not what you feel is morally ethical?

Also, is the 87 a hard score or possibly one of those standings scores? That is, “You scored higher than 87% of the poeple who took this test.”

  13. Andrew Says:

Well ScottF, assuming that the scale is 50 to 150 as claimed…. Then again, lawyers aren’t accountants for a reason.

  14. Alasdair Says:

Terry - are you implying that someone at UCLA might happen to have screen images of the post used as a screensaver on his PC ? Perish the thought !

    (grin)

  15. Anonymous Hoosier Says:

Fear not, Brendan, the MPRE is much harder for someone who invests an average amount of studying than the actual bar — any bar — turns out to be.

  16. Courtney T Says:

Hey, fyi, I have all my Barbri and PMBR materials from the Colorado bar last July that I’m looking to sell. If your interested email me! It will sure as heck be cheaper than the course . . .

  17. Anonymous Says:

Question for Brendan. Is there a website out there which gives which state bars are accepted where. For example, what other states is the Caifornia bar accepted in?

  18. NDLS2006 Says:

I’m kind of glad I waited until the week after the regular bar to take it. That way, I got notification that I’d passed in about the middle of the three-month freak-out over the real bar.

  19. Mindsurfer Says:

Let it also be known that approximately 100,000 lurkers have now saved this page.

  20. Brendan Loy Says:

    LOL.
