Campus mass tomorrow for Virginia Tech community
Posted by on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 10:30 pm

The victims of the Virginia Tech Massacre will be honored tomorrow at a campus-wide mass at Notre Dame, according to an e-mail that went out earlier this evening:

Please join Notre Dame students, faculty and staff for a campus-wide Memorial Mass as we pray for hope and consolation for the community of Virginia Tech in the wake of the terrible tragedy which occurred there today. The Mass will take place tomorrow evening, Tuesday, April 17th, at 10:00 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Let us continue in prayerful solidarity with the Virginia Tech community.

The death toll now stands at 32 plus the gunman, making this the deadliest shooting rampage in American history. There are reports that the shooter was a jilted lover who first killed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend before proceeding to execute 30 other people.

The waving Virginia Tech flag, by the way, is courtesy of Rocky Top Talk, which started a trend among the Sports Blog Nation blogs, including Rakes of Mallow, of marking the day’s tragic events with a “moment of silence” and displaying the VT flag. (Hat tip: InstaPundit.)

    Brendan,

Your Shockwave code doesn’t seem to be working….. but once you fix it I want to know where you got it from so I can use it myself……..

    Doug,

I’m not sure why it wasn’t working — I had just copied from from Rocky Top Talk’s source code, but it didn’t work for some reason. So I made an animated GIF instead. The quality suffers a bit, but it’s still OK I guess. If you want to download it and use it, feel free.

Okay, I think I’ve got it figured out.

A small detail, perhaps, but I feel compelled to do something tonight.

Glad you figured it out - I was just going to e-mail you, having figured it out myself thanks to an e-mail from Joel at Rocky Top Talk.

I’ve read this blog since Katrina, but have never posted. I work on the VT campus, but was not close to either scene. I worked in DC for five years. A secret service agent told me once that the thing that scared him most was a lone gunman, who wasn’t afraid to die. I expected something like this to happen in DC, not in Blacksburg. There will be a time to pick it apart later. This week is for healing. Thanks to ND for their gesture.

    A nice gesture.
