Any interest in an Irish Trojan fantasy baseball league?
Posted by on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Scott e-mailed me this morning asking about the possibility of setting up a Yahoo Fantasy Baseball league for my blog readers. I’ve never done fantasy baseball before, but it seems like it might be fun. And the deadline to get in is eight days from now, so we still have time. So I just thought I’d try to get a sense of reader interest… would you join such a thing? And would anyone like to volunteer to manage the league, since I don’t really know what I’m doing? :)

  1. Gardner Says:

The only thing I would say is that the season is very long and it is hard to keep everyone interested daily in their team.

  2. marty west Says:

    I agree with Gardner.

Football is one thing but Baseball is ridiculous. I would do it though…but I can’t promise I would keep a huge interest for all 168 trillion games.

  3. David K. Says:

i’d do fantasy football, fantasy baseball though, too much of a time investment for a casual fan, or barely a fan like myself.

  4. Vicki from NJ Says:

I’m in another league and although it’s fun enough that I’d be in for an Irish Trojan league, I have to admit that I really don’t pay all that much attention to it… our league is also head to head weekly, so it’s a little less intense (you can only edit your line-up once a week)… anyway, like I said, I’m in if you start a league… GO YANKEES! :)

  5. Andrew Says:

I’d be up for it. I gave up Yahoo Fantasy Baseball two years ago due to lack of time to manage my team. Besides, the draft is the most fun part.

While fantasy baseball might be too long, fantasy football drives me nuts — you can draft a great team, and you can go .500 because your star players all play subpar the week your opponent’s team goes off. I think fantasy basketball strikes a good balance with the roto points, drafting, and low-to-medium management requirements, but unfortunately the NBA bores me. Maybe I’ll do fantasy football (UK) since I like following the Premier League.

I’m more interested in an Electoral College Fantasy League. Did you finish your paper on the EC? I’d be interested in reading it.

sounds like a ton of fun

    Im in …

  9. Jay Johnson Says:

Put me down for some baseball. I’m all about it. If no one else is up for being Commissioner, I can probably swing that.

  10. NDLauren Says:

I’d too like to participate. Especially if I can draft a bunch of Astros…except Brad Lidge. Anyone else is more than welcome to pick him up on their roster :-)

  11. uscroger Says:

    Yah—I dislike baseball

  12. ScottF Says:

I’m new to Fantasy Baseball as an extension of the recent basketball pools but I’m really heating up to it. Since I mentioned it to Brendan I am obviously in. I am willing to try Commissioner, Jay, but am probably not a good choice with no playing experience yet.

  13. Jay Johnson Says:

Fantasy baseball is a sweet science. It’s the purest of the imaginary sports.

  14. texasyank Says:

    IN!

  15. ScottF Says:

Jay, How many teams do you think is best for a Yahoo league? Their public leagues have 12 teams but I think the custom leagues allow up to 20. If the response to this post merits having two Irish Trojan leagues we could each be a commissioner of one if you don’t mind me asking you one or two questions.

  16. ScottF Says:

    8 or 9 so far.

Well, I think, if we’re doing a league where we’re drawing from both the NL and the AL, that anything up to 16 or so teams would be ok. Once you get much past that, it’s a serious lack of players.

My primary league here locally is an NL only league. We switched from straight roto about 6 years ago, and play a week by week matchup like fantasy football.

Any of those options could work, but I’d say we’d need to get on the ball asap to get the league structured and setup so we can get draft done and points counting.

  18. ScottF Says:

Agreed. It looks we had all the interested parties respond that are going to respond but more could see a new post when the league is ready. Would you like to do the honors, Jay, since you have the experience? I’d say to consider the earlier comments and use your best judgement to set it up how you see fit. In the interest of time we can’t really discuss the parameters much more.
