Campus mass tomorrow for Virginia Tech community
Posted by on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 10:30 pm

The victims of the Virginia Tech Massacre will be honored tomorrow at a campus-wide mass at Notre Dame, according to an e-mail that went out earlier this evening:

Please join Notre Dame students, faculty and staff for a campus-wide Memorial Mass as we pray for hope and consolation for the community of Virginia Tech in the wake of the terrible tragedy which occurred there today. The Mass will take place tomorrow evening, Tuesday, April 17th, at 10:00 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Let us continue in prayerful solidarity with the Virginia Tech community.

The death toll now stands at 32 plus the gunman, making this the deadliest shooting rampage in American history. There are reports that the shooter was a jilted lover who first killed his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend before proceeding to execute 30 other people.

The waving Virginia Tech flag, by the way, is courtesy of Rocky Top Talk, which started a trend among the Sports Blog Nation blogs, including Rakes of Mallow, of marking the day’s tragic events with a “moment of silence” and displaying the VT flag. (Hat tip: InstaPundit.)

Sabres still struggling win!
Posted by on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 8:44 pm

The Sabres and Islanders are early in the second period of Game 3, and although it’s a scoreless tie at the moment, Buffalo looks terrible, being completely dominated by the homestanding Isles at the moment, just like they were in the first period of Game 2. Pretty freakin’ lame. The Sabres need to wake up, fast, or their Cup dreams are going to die against a team that has no business even seriously competing with them.

Bfloblog has an open thread.

UPDATE: Sabres score! Adam Mair with the goal. Becky celebrates, but asks, “Why is Mair scoring? He’s a goon! Why is the goon line the one producing?”

UPDATE 2: Another goal!! After a lengthy video replay. By Vanek this time. WOOO!! 2-0 Buffalo.

UPDATE 3: And just like that, the Islanders answer… 2-1.

UPDATE 4: 3-1! Man, I’m glad the title of this post has so quickly become obsolete. :) Here’s hoping it stays that way!

UPDATE 5: Dammit! With 8 seconds left in the second period, the Islanders cut it to 3-2.

FINAL UPDATE: Buffalo wins, 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. Woohoo!

Ah, government efficency

If there was ever a day to be sure the automatic stamp machine has enough stamps, it would be today, no? Instead, there's a ridiculously long line at the post office, with who knows how many people, like me, just needing postage for their taxes.

Tax Day

Indiana, the check's in the mail. Arizona & feds, thanks in advance for the refund! … It's a good thing Tennessee doesn't have a state income tax, otherwise we'd have to file FOUR sets of tax returns next year.

Spring has re-sprung

After two weeks of wintry April misery, it's finally a nice day again (albeit rather windy because of the pressure gradient from the massive nor'easter). Hopefully the second half of April is more like this!

Fire at Hesburgh?
Posted by on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 1:42 pm

While anything happening on a college campus today obviously pales in comparison to what happened at Virginia Tech — where at least 29 people are dead, and the death toll is expected to rise, in possibly the worst mass killing on a college campus in American history — there are reports here at Notre Dame of a much less calamitous, yet still newsworthy development: a fire at Hesburgh Library. Via e-mail, Kristin tells me, “According to undergrads in LaFortune who just evacuated (voluntarily, they weren’t forced to), floors 7 and 8 of Hesburgh were just filling up with a lot of smoke.” Anyone know anything about this?
