D’oh! Well, that didn’t go quite as we hoped, did it? Islanders 3, Sabres 2, final.
Don’t let my earlier post about the refs fool you. I don’t mean to be a sore loser. That post was written in the heat of the moment, with the crowd chanting “BULLS**T” and such. But while the refs were indeed maddeningly inconsistent, which will only feed the Koharski conspiracy theories, they weren’t the reason Buffalo lost. The Sabres simply didn’t play the way they’re capable of, and the Islanders played well enough to take advantage of that. So, congrats to them. Now, time to rip their hearts out through their throats by winning both games in Long Island and taking the series 4-1. :)
By the way, as noted earlier, my cell-phone posts weren’t working properly tonight for some reason. Only about half of the stuff I tried to post from HSBC Arena actually made it to the blog. I have no idea why, nor whether they’ll appear en masse later. Oh well. [UPDATE: Apparently it’s a Flickr glitch, and it sounds like the posts won’t upload belatedly. I could re-post them, but they’d be a little obsolete now. Oh, well.]
Anyway… onward to Game 3 on Monday. LET’S GO, BUFF-A-LO!!
P.S. During the break between the first and second periods, we met the Bfloblog guys, Mark and Kevin:
[Insert your own fanny-pack joke here.]
They both seemed like really nice, fun guys. And just to show you what a small world the Buffalo area is, Kevin once caddied for Becky’s parents at their country club. Heh! Also, just like me, he married a SHA girl. :)
Incidentally, Kevin agrees with my take on the power play that gave New York what proved to be the game-winning goal, namely that it came “off a very bad call - not because it wasn’t a penalty, but because of what they let go later.” There were truly some egregious no-calls, all of them far worse than the penalty that produced the decisive power play. But as I said: Buffalo’s mistake was letting the game be close enough for a bad call to influence the outcome. That should not be happening, as the Sabres are clearly superior to the Islanders. Hopefully on Monday they’ll start playing like again, from the opening faceoff.
P.P.S. Here’s a photo of tailgating, beer-pong-playing Sabres fans doing the “Let’s go, Buff-a-lo” chant after a passing metro train honked out the rhythm:
Heh. Buffalo fans are awesome. More photos to come later.
NOTE: This post was originally published at around 10:50 PM. I moved it forward in time slightly so it would be near the top of the blog overnight.
Tomorrow’s forecast for Rochester, NY from the National Weather Service: “Periods of snow before 9am, then periods of rain and snow between 9am and 1pm, then periods of rain between 1pm and 2pm, then periods of rain and snow between 2pm and 4pm, then periods of snow after 4pm.”
Forget global warming. The biggest threat to humanity could be cell-phone radiation killing bees. Heh.
Sabres 2, Islanders 2, Referees 1 with 10 minutes left.
Photo posts not working for some reason; may appear en masse later. Dunno. Buffalo trails 2-1 early in second period.
GOOOO SABRES, BEEEEAT ISLANDERS!!!
Box score here.
At a Buffalo institution. Lots and lots and lots of people in Sabres jerseys here, most of them rooting against the hated Senators in the Ottawa-Pittsburgh game on TV.
Dammit: “Leading scorer Nick Young will forego his senior season at USC and declare for the NBA draft, according to sources. … [He] plans to make his official announcement on campus early next week.” And there’ll be no going back: “Young has yet to hire an agent but will do so soon, according to one source who is close to the player.”
No word yet on Gabe Pruitt.
Well, we survived Friday the 13th unscathed. :) We had a fun evening hanging out with Casey and a couple of his Ph.D. buddies in Rochester. We also met Pericles, who is very cool. (Video to follow later.) We’re now settling down for the night in Casey’s awesome apartment. Tomorrow, we head back west to Buffalo, first to visit Shannon and the boys, and then… the game!! Go Sabres!!
Anyone have anything unlucky happen to them yesterday? Or for that matter, anything lucky?
