UConn on wrong side of NIT bubble?
Posted by on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 7:49 pm

There’s a new edition of NIT-ology out, and it claims UConn’s bubble has, for the moment, burst, as has two-time defending NIT champion South Carolina’s. The Huskies may need to beat Syracuse tomorrow to get into the NIT! Same goes for South Carolina against Arkansas on Thursday.

Speaking of tournaments that don’t matter, Rakes of Mallow has links to the BCS conferences’ tourney brackets. (The Pac-10 bracket there is outdated; here’s the updated one.)

UPDATE: Speaking of UConn, the women lost to Rutgers in the Big East title game. The Huskies join Duke, Tennessee, North Carolina and Ohio State as teams ranked in the Top 5 who lost in their conference tournaments. The highest-ranked conference tourney champion: #6 Stanford.

With the NIT new formula of taking conference regular season champs from small conferences that don’t win their tourney or otherwise get in the NCAAs, I can certainly see how some of the middle-of-the-road major conference folks get to stay home.

The NIT is an interesting animal. It all depends on which way your program is heading. For some big conference schools, a deep run in the NIT (or winning it) is a sign of an up and coming program, for others it’s just a sad alternative to the Big Dance showing that the program is headed the other direction.

And the Stanford women finally move ahead of AZ State. Given that they have the same record, and Stanford beat AZ state in all three head-to-head match-ups this year, I think that’s rather deserved.
