Ginny Zak retook sole possession of first place in the Living Room Times men’s pool when USC, the alma mater of all three of her children, defeated Texas tonight.
Zak, Becky Loy’s mother and a resident of Gold Canyon, Arizona, led after the first round but had fallen out of first place yesterday. She moved back into a tie for the lead with Tristin Thomsen when Southern Illinois beat Virginia Tech this afternoon, then surged ahead of Thomsen when the Trojans won. She has 236 out of a possible 272 points.
Thomsen, wife of Brendan Loy’s high-school classmate Matt Thomsen and a North Chicago resident, is second with 231 points. Close behind in third with 228 points is Amy Greca, wife of Tom Greca, another high-school classmate of Loy’s and Thomsen’s and the designer of this year’s pool logo. Full standings are here and after the jump.
With the tournament’s first weekend concluded, it is now possible to calculate that 109 contestants are still mathematically alive to win the pool; the other 154 out of the record 263 who entered have been eliminated. A table showing the number of scenarios (out of 32,768) in which each contestant would finish first can be found here.

Hmmm… why does the scenarios page have Florida crossed out for 15-20 of us? Does that mean if Florida wins that we cannot win the pool?

I don’t think so, because I don’t see how your picks happening could hurt you. That doesn’t really make any sense… something must be malfunctioning. I think I’ll just delete those columns from that page…

13 out 16 Sweet Sixteeners and I’m NINTH?
Phew, a tough room.

Dammit again.
Gimme the 12 points I would have had for having Vandy > GW and Vandy > Washington State, as I have in every other bracket I possess, and I’d be in second.
Of course, for some goofy reason, I also had Kentucky > Villanova and USC > Texas, which I don’t have in any other bracket, so if I had my “regular” bracket, I’d still have 219 points and would still be tied for eleventh.
