O’Shea leads NIT pool; 7 still alive
Posted by on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Mississippi State’s win over Florida State gave Dana O’Shea sole possession of the lead in the BrendanLoy.com NIT Pool and eliminated six contestants from any chance of winning.

Joel Thrift, Joe Boyle, Kevin Stockdill, Charles Fenwick, Lauren Taylor and Patrick Roach were knocked out of contention by the #1-seeded Rebels’ victory. Still alive: O’Shea and the rest of the top 5 — Gary Kirby, Cam Thomas, Stephen Lays and Steve Ivey — along with Colleen Duggan, currently in 10th place, and David Kreutz, currently in 16th.

Complete standings here and below; possible outcomes here.

In tonight’s other game, N.C. State and West Virginia are tied with 10 minutes left. If WVU wins, Ivey will be eliminated; if N.C. State wins, Kirby, Leys and Duggan will be eliminated. [Note: I previously stated that Thomas would be eliminated if N.C. State wins. That’s incorrect. Thomas cannot be eliminated tonight.]

Kirby finished second last year to Brad Miller. He would have won the pool if South Carolina had lost in either the semifinals or the title game. Instead, the Gamecocks won the tournament, giving Miller the pool championship.

Mississippi State and the N.C. State-WVU winner will make up half of this year’s NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden. The other half will be determined tomorrow night. Much like the NCAA Tournament, the NIT has held largely to form, with all four #1 seeds still playing and only one real underdog (#6-seed N.C. State) remaining in the tournament.
