Hauschulz leads women’s pool, but cannot win
Posted by on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Kevin Hauschulz just can’t catch a break in a Living Room Times pool.

Hauschulz, who has competed in 21 of the 22 Times pools without ever winning, leads the 10th annual women’s pool at the end of the Sweet Sixteen — but incredibly, he is mathematically eliminated from any chance of winning the pool.

How is that possible? Well, Hauschulz picked Duke to win the Greensboro Regional, but the Blue Devils lost to Rutgers yesterday, and the regional final tomorrow will pit Rutgers against Arizona State. If the Scarlet Knights win, Hauschulz will fall behind Josh Krause; if the Sun Devils win, he will fall behind Sandy Pilz. In either case, he will be unable to gain the lead back, because the remainder of his picks are identical to both Krause’s and Pilz’s.

So, as it turns out, Hauschulz was knocked out of contention — despite being in first place — when Duke senior Lindsey Harding missed two free throws with 0.1 seconds left that could have won the game against Rutgers.

This is not the first time in Living Room Times history that a contestant has been mathematically eliminated despite leading the pool late in the tournament. In 1999, Christine Perkins sat in first place heading into the national-championship game, but could not win because her champion was eliminated, and a win by either Duke or UConn would vault multiple contestants ahead of her. She ended up finishing tenth.

While Hauschulz can finish no better than second, eleven contestants are still alive to win the pool: Krause, Pilz, Rick Boeckler, Scott Fort, Katrina Lewonczyk, Tyler Condon, Jennifer Elam, Tom Greca, Brian Dupuis, Daniel Port and Greg Plank. Full possible-outcomes information can be found here.

Here are the current standings. After Hauschulz, two-time champion Boeckler is second, followed by a three-way tie between Krause, Pilz and Fort.
