Beat the Wolverines!

source file

UPDATE: I saw a guy in the crowd at the Rose Bowl wearing a Notre Dame hat. I wonder who he’s rooting for? To give you an idea, there’s a Facebook group that’s popular among ND students called “I hope a meteor falls on the Rose Bowl, killing both teams.” Heh.

UPDATE 2: It’s a defensive battle at halftime: USC 3, Michigan 3. What is this, an SEC game? ;)

UPDATE 3: Incidentally, Esteban Coca (a.k.a. alphadog) leads the Irish Trojan bowl pick ‘em contest at the moment. He got all four of today’s non-BCS bowls right, and took the lead over Brian Dupuis (a.k.a. DUP) when Wisconsin beat Arkansas. He’ll keep the lead if Michigan beats USC; if the Trojans win, Mike Wiser and Brad Miller will be tied for first place. Coca also needs Boise State to beat Oklahoma later tonight.

UPDATE 4: Touchdown Trojans! It’s 10-3 with 8:43 left in the third quarter.

UPDATE 5: Another touchdown Trojans! Woohoo! But Danelo missed the extra point…dammit. So, it’s 16-3.

UPDATE 6: 19-3 Trojans, start of the fourth quarter.

UPDATE 7: Now 19-11 after a Michigan touchdown and two-point conversion. Stupid missed extra point on USC’s first TD makes it a one-possession game. Gah. Early fourth quarter still.

“What is this, an SEC game? ;)”

How did I know that was coming…..?

  2. Brendan Loy Says:

Yeah, I’m nothing if not predictable when it comes to poking fun at the SEC. :)

  3. Mike Says:

But the SEC does such a good job persecuting insider trading and whatnot…

  4. Matt Says:

Watching an SEC securities investigation might be more exciting than most of today’s bowl games… someone wake me when this is over. It’s been painful to watch today.

This ND fans says Fight On!

Michigan’s claim of 11 National Titles (shown at the beginning of the broadcast) is obscenely revisionist, grossly misleadig history. USC has a more impressive winning tradition and does not need to pad its historical stats to trick the nation.

  6. Anonymous Says:

*”fan.” Only one of me ;)

  7. Matt Says:

Any idea where they get the other 4? I’ve always seen them credited with 7.

  8. Matt Says:

I looked it up (told you, the game isn’t very riveting, so it gave me something to do.) Michigan claims national championships in ‘03 (Princeton), ‘04 (Penn), ‘18 (Pitt), and ‘32 (Southern California) in addition to their recognized championships (’01, ‘02, ‘23, ‘33, ‘47, ‘48, and ‘97).

  9. Anonymous Says:

did ABC sign a contract with USC?

this is a fuckin poodle love fest….
If Jarret showboated like that to me, I would have gone for his knees. What a classless T.O. wannabe. Takes away from the great throw by Booty.

  10. Texasyank Says:

Danelo has brought the thrill back to the extra point.

    Shades of WSU ‘02.

  11. Anonymous Says:

    Jarrett = T.O.

how many times do we have to see him pull this shit off?

He would be taken out at least a series on any other team… oh yeah, players coach… I forgot.

  12. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

‘03, ‘04 & 1918 are a joke and they are not recognized by the NCAA only Michigan and of course the Big 10

  13. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

Jarrett really needs to stop it but it is hard when the Michigan db’s have been beefing all game and now he has the upper hand so it looks worse than it is….laying the ball on #19’s lap was worth a penalty

  14. Texasyank Says:

Jarrett with his crap has probably punked his way out of Rose Bowl MVP.

    And I love the kid.

    They’ll give MVP to Booty.

They should give it, collectively, to the USC defense.

  15. Matt Says:

Has Kirk said anything about whether or not Michigan still deserves to play for the National Championship? And, apparently its a rule that the ABC announcers have to say “Michigan has a great defense” every other play, in spite of the fact that they have been lit up the past two games for 70 or so points.

  16. David K. Says:

Um…did you watch the game at all? Michigan DOES have a great defense. USC just also happens to have some spectacular wide recievers.

  17. Mike Says:

So, you complain about a player being classless, while stating that if you were subjected to treatment like what he’s putting out, you would make a deliberate attempt to cripple him? Pot/kettle issue here, perhaps?

  18. Matt Says:

Yep… watched them give up 4 touchdowns and two field goals, as well as 430 total yards. This after giving up more than 40 points in their last game.

  19. Anonymous Says:

    punishment fits the crime Mike.

Everyone should be convinced that Musberger and Poodle are bunk buddies after tonight.

  20. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

All three of the ABC Wonks got this game soooo wrong…cant wait to see Flutie and James have to say

  21. GeuxTigers Says:

All hope is lost for CFB if Jarrett receives MVP.

Toast to the primadonnas…. wait, maybe he can be Mike Williams Part II?

  22. Brendan Loy Says:

I think Michigan has a good defense. I see no empirical evidence to suggest that it is “great.”

Dwayne Jarrett shouldn’t have done what he did. That said, I think the context is relevant. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the guy he showboated to was the one who had a dirty, late hit on him earlier. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but it does make Jarrett’s action a little more understandable. Also, Mike’s point is excellent. It’s a lot like the Irish “fans” on NDNation who pride themselves on how “classy” they are, yet openly advocate physical violence against me because I wear USC shirts.

    Anyway: WOOOOOHOOOO!!!!! Fight on!!!!

  23. Brendan Loy Says:

Jarrett deserves MVP based on how he played on the field. Whether it should be taken away based on one classless gesture is debatable, and I can see the decision going either way — in any event, I don’t see how “all hope is lost” if the player who was, in fact, the most valuable player today, wins the MVP.

What the hell is wrong with the sound on ABC??

  24. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

No one has mentioned the Reggie Bush sideline snub…dumb IMHO

  25. Brendan Loy Says:

    Actually, it was discussed here.

  26. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

“All hope is lost for CFB if Jarrett receives MVP.”

Someone needs to take a deep breath and breath easy….there are thousands of things wrong with CFB and Jarrett showboating does not make the top 50

  27. NEBRASKA 94, 95 & 97 Says:

    missed that file…my bad

  28. Brendan Loy Says:

No worries, Nebraska. And I agree with you about Jarrett. Like I said, he shouldn’t have done what he did. But it’s not like he punched a guy or something. It’s not obviously an offense worthy of taking away the otherwise-clearly-deserved MVP award. It’s possible to argue that it is, but it’s not obviously so.

  29. Texasyank Says:

So Jarrett won the MVP, and well-deserved.

I thought he had punked his way out of it.

I have no problem with the award.

I walk a fine line here. In a perfect world, everyone is a Gayle Sayers and a Barry Sanders: scoring, then flipping the ball to the referee.

But we are all human. If Jarrett was getting crap from the UM DBs, who are we to say we would not behave the same?

But THEN: I saw an SC team go into a tailspin for four seasons following their Rose Bowl victory in 1996, teams that learned all the wrong lessons from Keyshawn Johnson and became worse than bad: punk-ass. I watched teams that were so consumed with what they would say or how late they could hit, the notion of actually winning the game became secondary.

I saw some of that today. I wish I hadn’t. That is all.
