Brennan still can’t decide
Posted by on Monday, January 15, 2007 at 11:26 am

Hawaii QB Colt Brennan is keeping his options open:

Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan said last night he will declare himself eligible for the NFL Draft today, but with the possibility of pulling back and returning to UH for his senior season.

Brennan emphasized he is doing so to meet today’s deadline for underclassmen to make themselves available for the pro draft and that he then has until Thursday to take his name off the draft list. He said he was still 50-50 on whether he will turn pro or not.

“What I’m asking for is I need more time. I’m trying to keep myself eligible (for the draft), but I’m still torn. I’m still just torn down the middle.

“I’m still awaiting some information, some of it personal,” Brennan added.

Some of the information he wants is whether Louisville junior quarterback Brian Brohm will declare for the draft. Brohm’s presence in or absence from the draft could affect Brennan’s status.

Brennan was originally scheduled to announce his decision at a 10:30 news conference at UH this morning. That has been changed to 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Go, Brohm, go! Stay, Colt, stay!

In another article, he’s quoted as saying of his draft declaration today: “It does not mean I’ve made a decision. No, that is not it at all. I swear to God that’s not it. I need more time.”

UPDATE: D’oh! Brian Brohm is staying put.

Actually, that’s good for the continuing credibility and success of the Big East. But it’s bad for my favorite Big East team, Rutgers, making it harder for them to win the conference next year — and it’s worse if it helps convince Brennan to go pro.

I think you can declare but if you don’t hire an agent you can come back. Is that how it works?

Why should we think that Brennan would make any better of an NFL QB than David Klingler or Andre Ware, et al? He’s in a run and shoot offense, so as long as he’s a competent passer who can make quick decisions, he’s in a system that’s designed for him at UH.

I’m certainly not saying he’s a bad QB, as I’ve not seen enough of him play to know one way or another. It’s really just a question.

No one in the NFL operates in the June Jones system anymore, so I don’t see how Brennan is much more than a 2d day flier for a team looking to take a chance on a project QB. Don’t know what Mel Kiper says about him (and honestly don’t care), but it would seem to me that he’d be best served to try another year of college, maybe get more hype (and possible Heisman run?) to boost his potential stock for next year, when it’s just him and Brian Brohm as the “big names” in the QB field.

Then again, I’m subject to being persuaded otherwise. I have a feeling, though, if he were being counseled that he projected as a 1st/2d round pick, he’d go now. Seems indecision is likely to look like a later round projection.

    I really hope Brennan stays.

Hawaii will be awesome next year if he stays put.

^^^ I want him to stay so I can have a new bandwagon team next season. If he bounces then I have to start looking all over again. So do it for me Colt.

No, he only has three days to reconsider, as long as he does not hire an agent within that time period. That is as far as he may go in “testing the waters,” unlike in college basketball, where players have a much longer time period to withdraw so long as they haven’t hired an agent.

They just reported on ESPN that Brennan has filed his papers to enter the NFL Draft.. He has 72 hours to finalize his decision.

Yes, USC 1L, that’s the same thing that’s reported in this post, I think. :)
