The NFL has suspended New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Hollis Thomas for the rest of the season because of a positive steroids test. Good! you say. Well except for the fact that the positive test is due to his prescription asthma medication. Classy NFL, real classy. Way to encourage all those asthmatic kids out there who fight through the disease so they can participate in sports. Sorry Thomas, if you want to play for the NFL, you have to do it without being able to breathe.

I’m not sure if “classy” is really the right word in this situation, especially in light of its recent overuse (arguably) on BrendanLoy.com and the discussion thereof. :) That said, you’re right, if the facts as reported here are correct, that sucks and the NFL should be ashamed.

yea this situation kind of sucks, but couldnt you see a whole lot of NFL players getting asthma if an exception was made here?

Yeah, but I’d say, cross that bridge when you come to it. The mere possibility of abuse isn’t a good enough reason to screw over someone who clearly isn’t trying to abuse the system but actually has a legitimate need for medicine.

(As I say - “if the facts as reported here are correct.” If there’s something we don’t know, some reason to believe that this player is actually an example of someone trying to abuse the system, then that would be a whole different situation, obviously.)

For fuck’s sake, Davie, come up with another word. But your point and Brendan’s subsequent post are very valid concerns.
fair
just
reasonable
fair-minded
rational
evenhanded
unbiased
I consulted a simple thesaurus for this, Davie. I know you can do better.

As long as we’re dispensing friendly advice, here’s a piece: he might be more inclined to actually listen to you if you didn’t insist on calling him “Davie.”

No friendly advice has been dispensed here, only sarcastic and demeaning responses with a list of words that was not intended to be helpful, but may actually be of aid. As for your advice, I politely decline. I say ‘polite’ sincerely, believe it or not, because I continue to hold you in high regard, Brendan, and I feel that sometimes I fail to mention that enough. Unfortunately, however, I don’t care if Davie listens to me or not and prefer the name I call him to whatever you are suggesting.

Which just goes to show what kind of character you really have Wobbly. But honestly, i really hope you don’t care what i think about you, i’m just some guy on the internet who you don’t know (and vice versa). Hopefully you treat people you meet in real life with more respect, otherwise you are going to be a lonely lonely man (or woman).

Roger that, Davie. Character concerns aside (you’re certainly correct in assuming that I do not treat ‘real life’ people the way I treat you, but if I were to meet such a person as you in real life, who knows), I hope you’ll be able to see through our mutual dislike and discard the ‘classy’ term. I think we’ve accidentally stumbled onto something here re: terms you should use instead of ‘classy.’ Don’t let the fact that I was the one who suggested them impede your future use of more descriptive terms that better display your intellect.
Your friend,

All that hate is going to burn you up, Wobbly.
December 6th, 2006 at 10:14:23 am
Asshole.
December 6th, 2006 at 11:02:52 am
Lojo,
1) There’s no hate and 2) nobody asked you.

Wobbly, with all due respect, and you are not my friend, that is a place that people in my life have to earn.
As for classy, well I’m kinda enjoying the reactions i keep getting, so i figure as long as its appropriate to the situation i’ll keep using it. It may not be as much fun as Brendan’s tweaking the noses of people with his on campus pro-USC stance, but i figure he’s a good role model sometimes.

Tongue-in-cheek with the signature thing, Davie. I understand the ‘c’-word issue, too. Because it’s not going away anytime soon, apparently, I won’t let it get under my skin. But also, I will call out any ND person who uses it in the way you despise. I’d prefer that the fans here merely refer to ND fans as “better.” That would be more accurate.

David, wouldn’t the title of this post be more accurate if it stated, “NFL to ALL players: Screw you”?
December 6th, 2006 at 7:06:25 pm
While that may be the case Andrew, this incident is pretty targeted towards asthmatics at its broadest
