History repeats itself…
Posted by on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 7:00 pm

We’ve all heard the line before about history repeating itself.

Last week Nicraguans elected Daniel Ortega as their new President. Ortega was a member and leader of the Sandinista rebel group involved in the Nicaraguan civil war of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Today, on the heels of the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense, President Bush has nominated Robert Gates to replace him. Gates is a former Director of the CIA and as a Deputy Director was involved along with Oliver North and William Casey in the U.S. backing of the Contra’s who opposed the Sandinista’s.

Thats right, to quote Wonkette, “History doesn’t just repeat itself; it repeats itself with the same exact people.”

    I think that Comrade Ortega should Decline his election, emigrate to Vermont, get Naturalized, and run for the US Senate. He’d win :) and then he could join Senator Bernie in the Sandersnistas Caucus. :] This would be more Prestigious (and also Easier :) than being president of Nicaragua. ;> Granted, Saint Joe Lieberman might be Contra this plan; but Chris Dodd (our Next President :) would warmly welcome his compatriot Latin Leftie to Washington I’m just sure. ;}

    Hee hee ;>

    History repeats itself, alright. Anyone wanna take bets on how long it takes those who screamed for Rumsfeld’s head to get their panties in a twist over Robert Gates for his “invlovement” in the U.S. backing of the Contras? Now that he has to be confirmed by a Democratic Senate, expect this guy to get dragged through the mud as a nice little “hello” from the new kids on the block.

    Which is the whole point, Bush no longer gets rubber stamp approval. All you GOP’ers talked about madates and political capital back in 2004 and how the voters have spoken. Well i can’t think of a more decisive way for them to have told Bush and Co. during this election cycle that they are getting a flunking grade. And don’t act like this is somehow the big bad dems picking on the poor little republicans, they do they exact same thing when the shoe is on the other foot.

    You guys just recognized that Latin America has become socialist on Bush’s watch? Reagan stopped these fuckers in the 80s. It is a sad day when Danny Ortega is seen as one of the least offensive Latin American leaders.

    I seem to call the Contra affair was part of Reagan’s efforts and that it made quite alot of lefties unhappy. Are we now saying it was the right idea?

    Lojo-

    Not being a “lefty” myself, I had no problem with Reagan confronting the un-Democratic spread of socialism in Latin America in the 80s. Now selling weapons to terrorists in Iran to finance those efforts in violation of U.S. policy - THAT I had a problem with.

  9. Joe Mama Says:

    David,

    If by “no longer getting rubber stamp approval” you mean “getting dragged through the mud,” then I agree. We’ve seen how Dems withheld “rubber stamp approval” of Roberts and Alito by trying their hardest to drag THEM through the mud. No one said this is “the big bad dems picking on the poor little republicans.” It’s like you say, history repeats itself . . .

    I heard they may try to get him confirmed before the new Senators take office in January.

    Noted.

    A&A, those weapons we were selling to Iran were for the continuation of war with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, thereby encouraging both countries to bludgeon each other to death so we didn’t have to worry about them becoming a problem for us or their neighbors. Were you against Iran-Contra because the administration was doing it contra Congressional direction or because the weapons were being sold to Iran? IOW, if we were selling weapons to Canada instead, then would it have been okay? Just curious.
