Memo to commentators: do your research!
Posted by on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at 2:47 pm

I realize CBS doesn’t regularly televise Notre Dame games, but there’s no excuse for these announcers continually expressing surprise at Charlie Weis deciding to go for it on fourth down. Going for it on fourth down is a Charlie Weis trademark. Everyone who watches Notre Dame football knows this. Do your research, guys!

Anyway, it’s 31-14 Notre Dame after a 4th-and-goal attempt by the Irish failed. Navy is deep in their own territory with 12:54 left. Brian Stouffer is still liveblogging.

The commentators are continually fellating Brady Quinn. Ugh. Shall I vomit now or later?

  2. BK Says:

Archie Manning: “He’s my Heisman guy.” But hey, what does he know about quarterbacks?

  3. zing Says:

Maybe if you vomited more you wouldn’t be so fat.

  4. Traveler Says:

In its ads for “60 Minutes,” CBS also expects us to be surprised that Charlie swears (gasp!) on the sidelines…

  5. Anonymous Says:

Ya. I agree Beckles. Quinn sucks. He looked horrible. SEVEN. S-E-V-E-N incomplete passes. Pathetic. Pitiful. Unacceptable. He should be benched. If he keeps this up he won’t even make Arena 2, let alone NFL Europe.

And Brendan, the commentators mentioned that Charlie Weis is not afraid to go for it on 4th down. On the first 4th down attempt they mentioned that he was 14-18 and he had probably gone for it 10 times more than any other coach. They clearly acknowledged that Weis likes to go for it, calling him “the gambler”. You need to listen better.

Now be nice zing…we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings with the truth.

Oh, and hey Opie….can’t wait to hear about how Quinn made so many mistakes today. Man, he didn’t complete 100% of his passes…no way is he a legit Heisman candidate.

  7. Timugen Says:

    Rebecca,

Did it ever occur to you that the commentators were fellating Quinn because he played an OUTSTANDING game? Like it or not, he’s a Heisman candidate. When you have a Heisman candidate on a national broadcast having a great game he’s gonna get some gratuitous head from the commentators whether his name is Brady Quinn or not.

  8. Anonymous Says:

Did you even watch the game? Did you see that throw Quinn made on the TD to Grimes. A perfect strike, rolling out on the run TO THE LEFT, ON ONE FOOT.

  9. Rebecca Loy Says:

I didn’t say that Quinn wasn’t playing well. In fact, earlier today, I commented, “Looks like Quinn is trying to make a stronger case for the Heisman today. It’s nice to see him play well.”

I just hate it when commentators heap praise on one player. It’s annoying.

  10. BK Says:

Good thing you aren’t a USC fan, otherwise those last few years would have been REALLY annoying with those Leinart and Bush guys. ;)

  11. Rebecca Loy Says:

They were annoying with the Leinart and Bush crap too. I think one of the problems with such commentary is that it makes it difficult to tell who really deserves all that praise and who’s just being hyped to a ridiculous extent. I would argue that Reggie Bush probably deserved the hype, given the way he won the Heisman and all. But while Brady played a good game today, I don’t think he’s a shoe in for the Heisman like these commentators seemed to believe. Troy Smith still looks pretty good and while I know that receivers rarely win, I’d love to see Manningham get some votes too.

  12. Brendan Loy Says:

    Becky:

Reggie Bush probably deserved the hype, given the way he won the Heisman and all

That doesn’t follow, and you know it. If Brady wins the Heisman, you’ll still think he was overhyped. The Heisman voting is influenced by the hype, thus it cannot be the arbiter of whether the hype is deserved or not. Reggie Bush certainly did deserve the hype, but not because he won the Heisman. (If so, it would follow that Jason White also “probably deserved the hype.” Heh.) Reggie Bush deserved the hype because he consistently demonstrated that he was awesome, regardless of the level of competition. Brady hasn’t done that this year, though hopefully today shows he’s on the right track to start doing it.

I don’t think he’s a shoe in for the Heisman like these commentators seemed to believe

I don’t think the commentators said or implied that he’s a shoo-in… just that he’s a serious candidate.

  13. Rebecca Loy Says:

You misunderstood me. When I said the way he won the Heisman, I wasn’t talking about the simple fact that he won, but the fact that he received a bazillion first place votes which seems to indicate a consensus among hopefully knowledgeable voters that this kid was something to talk about.

  14. Beaver Says:

Becky, why would you want Manningham to get votes? He hasn’t played the last three games. He might not even be the best receiver in the Big 10, and he sure as heck isn’t the best receiver in the Nation (let alone the best player, period). He had a great day against ND and a few other good games. Why on earth would this man warrant a Heisman vote?

  15. Rebecca Loy Says:

I like Manningham. He’s the type of player that makes you watch him when he’s in the game. I’d like to see how he plays when he comes off his knee surgery…next week I think.

  16. Beaver Says:

Oh. I thought you were suggesting that he actually deserved votes. I understand having favorites that you just want to get votes because they’re fun to watch.
