As you may already have heard — Texasyank certainly has — Reggie Bush signed a contract over the weekend worth $62 million with the New Orleans Saints, and thus is no longer a holdout at their training camp.
The same cannot be said, however, of Matt Leinart and the Arizona Cardinals. Not only have they failed to agree on a contract — as a result of which Leinart is a no-show at training camp, which started yesterday — but they aren’t even talking.
More on both Leinart and Bush here.

The difference between Arizona and New Orleans is that Arizona is in no big rush to get Leinart going since he will probably spend a year learning Dennis Green’s system anyway. While Kurt Warner is no longer MVP caliber, with his receiver set and James in the backfield, Arizona could actually have a winning season with or without Leinart. New Orleans, on the other hand, is desperate to do something following the mess of last season and Bush can start right now, especially in the split-back formation the Saints are planning to use frequently.

leinhart is asking for more money than his slot dictates. i believe he was drafted 9 or 10, and the guy directly drafted after him 10 or 11 was a qb too and was already signed. you’d figure he would get a contract similar to that, and the cardinals are believed to have already offered a better contract than the guy who was drafted afterhi. leinhart is believed to be wanting a contract similar to what the 6-7 picks got. usually these end up being pissing contests, but i think this has the potential to get kind of ugly and last for a while.

According to one of the articles I linked, Arizona is reportedly offering Leinart a worse deal than last year’s #10, Mike Williams, got. But of course this is all rumor… who knows?
One question: Why do you insist on spelling his name “Leinhart”? I see that a lot, but it baffles me in a post where his name is spelled correctly directly above. Just curious. :)

you do something enough and it just becomes habit

I’ve heard somewhere that NFL players are starting to get less money than before because so many of these guys coming in from the first round of the draft end up being a bust. It may be that all players in the first round are, as a whole, getting less money than last year.

The big deal is that virtually noone cares about whether Leinart will sign because he just isn’t even in the same talent ballpark as Reggie Bush, so there is not even close to the same press coverage.
