It would appear that Parker Brothers thinks we are all so incapable of dealing with cash that they best switch Monopoly to plastic. (You can read about it at engadget. Or here at Sky News.) While I think this is crazy, they might have something, given that most cashiers these days can’t count change without the register telling them what it is. Much less understand why you are handing them $12.07 when the bill is $6.82 but I digress.

But Dane, don’t you enjoy those rare occasions when you receive the described look from the cashier, annoyed because the cost involves a messy transaction (2 bills and 6 coins), and the amount you handed over looks challenging (3 bills and 3 coins), but when you cook it all up in the magic cauldron of the cash register -
- out comes one bill and one coin!!
Once in a while, said cashier will regard you as though you were an alchemist.

True Jazz, it can be a tad entertaining. But it is kind of sad that people don’t really have any idea how change works any longer. I mean it’s really not that hard, you don’t even really have to do math, you just need to look at the cash you have available and do a little counting and you can optimize your change. I’ve also found that it astonishes some people when they realize all the coins I have fit easily into the palm of my hand–especially effective on the people that have massive five gallon jugs full of loose change.

Who in the heck uses cash to pay?

I use cash to pay. I find I spend less money when I do so.

One and two cent coins were discontinued in Australian in 1990/91 so everything here is rounded up or down to the nearest five - still hasnt made it any easier for cashiers.
I bought groceries for $13.25 last week and was given $46.75 change from $50.00 because the cashier made a mistake when entering the notes tendered to her and had to work it out for herself. Even my 11 year old could work out the correct change.
