So much for the Battle of L.A.
Posted by on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 10:55 pm

Sorry, L.A. sports writers. It’ll be Clippers-Suns, not Clippers-Lakers. The second-best team in the City of Angels (heh) blew a 3-1 series lead against Phoenix, capping the choke with a humiliating 121-90 blowout loss just now. I guess maybe Steve Nash was an OK choice for MVP, after all.

The universe gets weirder, as the LA Clippers have now survived one round LONGER than the Lakers.

This has got to be a great day for Clippers fans, as they can now say, “Hey, Lakers fans, how do you like THEM apples? We’re hosting playoff games in your facility longer than you will be, and you get to hear all about how we play the Suns while your team does nothing.”

How long has it been since the Clippers have had the spotlight all to themselves, gamewise? Have they ever been playing alone before, with no Lakers around to steal their thunder?

  2. Mike T Says:

hehe are u gonna become an ardent Suns fan now?

  3. Brendan Loy Says:

Nah, I was kinda sorta rooting for the Lakers, just because I thought the Battle of L.A. would be fun.

Once I move to Phoenix full-time, I will probably become a Suns fan… civic pride and all that. I don’t really have a favorite NBA team at this point, so it’s not like I’d be switching teams.

Same goes for the NFL — I usually just root for USC players (hence I was cheering for the Bengals this past year), but I don’t really have a team that I call “mine.” So I probably would have become a Cardinals fan anyway, and now that Leinart’s there, even better. Becky will undoubtedly remain a Bills fan, but again, I have no particular loyalty to any NFL team, so there’s no reason for me not to adopt the Cardinals.

Whether I’ll become a Coyotes fan… I dunno. I tend to think I’ll probably keep rooting for the Sabres. But the NHL is another sport where I haven’t traditionally had a personal loyalty to any team (well, since the Whalers left Hartford) — I’ve adopted the Sabres this year because of Becky and her friends, but I’d be lying if I said they were “my” team. I’ve gotten emotionally invested in them, but it’s not like an undying loyalty. So whether I stick with the Sabres, root for the Coyotes, or root for a Hartford team (if the rumors of them getting a team back pan out) remains to be seen.

Of course, I will always remain a Red Sox fan. The Diamondbacks might become my favorite NL team, but the Sox will always be #1. :)

And, needless to say, I’m never going to become an ASU fan. Sorry, BK. :) My college sports loyalties are much more well-defined than my pro sports loyalties.

Speaking of bandwagons, Typical L.A. Fan is really confused right now. Who is he supposed to root for? USC football lost to Texas and now is embroiled in scandal. UCLA basketball almost returned to glory but then got creamed by Florida. The Lakers almost made a great run, but then choked. Are they supposed to jump on the Clippers bandwagon?? Heh.

  5. Mike Says:

You know, I’ve never understood how losing in the championship game makes your team bad. I mean, arguably, you finished 2nd. That’s still quite good. It seems to me that it’s better than all those teams that didn’t even make it to the championship game. But, then again, that’s me attempting to apply logic to sports, and there are few things which are even less suceptible to logic than views on sports teams…

  6. Brendan Loy Says:

    Logical: UCLA sucks

Illogical: Any conclusion which contradicts UCLA’s suckiness

    :)

  7. Mad Max, Esquire Says:

The 76-ers haven’t been able to go all the way because the team is just a feeder for A.I, and I suspect the same thing is happening in LA. Kobe can’t win it on his own, especially if the Suns or any other team can shut him down (by shutting down, I mean scoring below 30 points. This is Kobe Bryant, after all).

  8. Kristy Says:

Second place is the first loser.

  9. BK Says:

ASU doesn’t want you anyway. Besides, we have your better half (at least partially).

    ;)

  10. Brendan Loy Says:

we have your better half (at least partially)

Does that mean you have my better quarter? :)

  11. Andrew Long Says:

Dumbass. What an easy question to answer. The Mighty Ducks! Apparently you’ve been too blinded by jumping on the Sabres’ bandwagon to notice the Ducks are kicking ass. :-P

Btw, as much as I respect Nash, there’s no way he should have been MVP. Without Nash, the Suns still make the playoffs. Without Kobe, the Lakers are quite possibly the worst team in the NBA. I’d even take LeBron over Nash for MVP.
