So long, silly little fairy
Posted by on Sunday, May 28, 2006 at 6:18 pm

Has anyone else noticed that the Dodge Caliber commercial involving a fairy — a literal fairy, a winged female creature with a magic wand — has mysteriously changed? The line “silly little fairy” has been removed from the ad. Presumably this was in response to pressure from gay-rights groups. Timothy Kincaid was not amused by the ad, and Bob Garfield called it “hate speech in disguise.” But Cicero’s Son at the conservative site Free Republic says, “Without that line, the ad is pretty incoherent and pointless.”

Personally, I think the commercial is stupid, with or without the line.

(According to Free Republic, the “altered” version was appearing as long ago as May 1. But I can personally testify that the unedited, “silly little fairy” version was still appearing — at least on OLN — as recently as a few days ago.)

That fairy was hot. She reminded me of Saffron from Firefly, who was fully hot.

  2. Mad Max, Esquire Says:

If that line was offensive to gays, maybe David Spade should be forced to change his last name.

  3. 4-7 Says:

I need help with that one

  4. NEBRASKA 94/95&97 Says:

there are a hundred other things that the gays could be fighting for and they pick this dumbass commercial?

5,000 people are dead in Indonesia and the gay mafia is up in arms over this stupid ad…unbelievable.

  5. Anonymous Says:

the ad is pointless period. I mean what’s the connection between the quality of a car one might buy and a fairy flying around who’s magic is not able to affect said car?

  6. Mad Max, Esquire Says:

Speaking of gays being up in arms, the Russian police beat the shit out of a bunch of gay Russian protestors this weekend for trying to organize. Why doesn’t the gay community raise hell about that. It seems a little more important than an unintentionally offensive (though I still don’t see it) ad.

  7. Robbie Says:

You know, when I saw that ad I immediately thought “wow that’s so totally GAY!!!” Whatever.

Is the term “Fairy Tales” off limits now as well??!!?

  8. Alasdair Says:

Brendan - why is your dog posting comments now ?

  9. Alasdair Says:

Ummm … one suspects that the offending part wasn’t the fairy per se … one suspects it may well have been the steroetype into which the fairy turned the guy who made the “Silly little fairy” comment !

Me - being Scots - it’s sorta tastelessly cute … and I also suspect that my divers gay friends probably consider it mostly way beneath worrying about … now, losing your head cuz of Islamic sharia, that is a tad more imemdiate …

Do I find this ad offensive?

    You bet your sweet Aspercreme!

Actually, no I don’t. I thought it was funny as hell.

Oops! I’m running late! I’m due to read a “derogatory term used for homosexuals - Tale” to my child.

I noticed that the “thump” sound she makes when she hits the wall has been “toned down” too. It’s like they had a meeting about it and decided to remove all the fun.

I hadn’t seen the ad in a while, it was on tonight.. this is a FANTASTIC commercial.. my 3 year old daughter loves the “silly little fairy” line… If homosexuals are “bent out of shape” for this commercial, they have nothing better to do.. It was clearly a preppy guy, not a fag.

  13. The Nittany Turkey Says:

First of all, I just saw the commercial and Googled “silly little fairy” because she looked pretty hot to me, even though she got about three seconds of face/body time. Anyhow, the “silly little fairy” line was not cut out. It was on the Tivo and I replayed it just to make sure. This was on the local WB channel. Perhaps it’s being only selectively censored.

Anyhow, if “gay activists” are offended by the line, which clearly refers to a REAL fairy, the kind with wings and a magic wand, then perhaps they’ll be offended by someone saying “fruit” in a Chiquita Banana commercial. Or “swish” in a basketball oriented Nike commercial? Or maybe “fudge packer” in a Fanny Farmer fudge commercial…

    You get the point!

OK…just saw the chopped version of the commercial during the hockey game on the same night as I saw the full version. The censored one was on the NBC affiliate; the original one was on WB. The NBC version had no “Silly little fairy!” and only a very brief look at the big guy after he was turned into metrosexual at the behest of Tinkerbell’s wand. Bowing to pressure from the left is what I’ve come to expect from NBC–if you’ve watched any of the Law & Orders over the past couple of years, you have received their political messages.

Ok…I agree with you all! I’m gay, I’m NOT offended by this commercial! I don’t know what all the hoopla is about. I like it! I laugh when I see it. I own a gay bar, I hear all that there is to hear, but I’ve not heard anything about being offended by this commerical! Thanks for posting this. I’d like Chriysler to put the line back in the commercial! She didn’t turn him “gay”, she made him preppy! (ther’re the ones that should get offended if anyone should!)
