Mike Tran already knows he has a better NCAA bracket than any of his 217 competitors in this year’s Living Room Times men’s pool. The only question remaining is whether he has the best bracket in Times history.
Tonight’s Final Four games will help decide that. Florida plays George Mason at 6:07 PM; UCLA plays LSU at 8:47 PM. Tran, who clinched the pool last weekend after picking 13 of the Sweet 16, 7 of the Elite Eight and 3 of the Final Four, has Florida and UCLA reaching the title game.
If the Gators and Bruins do indeed win, Tran — a 2004 UCLA grad and second-year Notre Dame law student — will clinch at least a tie for the largest margin of victory in Times history. (He would tie Justin Vale’s 47-point margin in the 2003 men’s pool if Florida beats UCLA in the title game, or shatter it — setting a new record of 72 points — if UCLA beats Florida. He would also break Vale’s record, with 52, if UCLA beats George Mason in the title game.)
In order to break the record for most total points in a Times men’s pool, Tran needs everything to go perfectly: UCLA must beat Florida in the championship game. Otherwise, Brian Kiolbasa, who scored 362 points in last year’s pool, will hold onto the record — beating Tran by 6 points if Florida beats UCLA in the final, or by just 1 point if UCLA beats George Mason in the final. It should be noted, however, that Kiolbasa achieved his point total in a year when the tournament was much more predictable, with two #1 seeds, North Carolina and Illinois, reaching the title game. If Florida and UCLA win tonight, regardless of what happens on Monday, Tran will have an excellent case that his prediction record is the most impressive of any contestant in the history of Times pools.
If UCLA ultimately beats Florida for the national championship, Tran — whose remarkable success was discussed last week in an article on SI’s website — will have literally one of the best brackets in America. If he had entered his Living Room Times bracket in the Yahoo! and ESPN tournament contests, it would have been good enough for 2nd place and 3rd place, respectively, in those national contests, if UCLA beats Florida for the title.

Go George Mason and/or LSU!
In the alternative, go Florida, beat UCLA for the title!

Sports rooting in the alternative… I love it! We law students are such nerds! :)
