Ray Nagin election watch ~ Part VII: primary night
Posted by on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 11:15 pm

With 400 of 442 precincts Unofficially reporting to his Office, the herculean, heroic & foreDoomed LASOS Al Ater posts that [scroll down] Hizzoner now stands at 38%, to Mitch-son-of-Moon-brudder-of Mary’s :) 29%, to Audobon Boy’s 17%.

Looks like Nagin vs Landrieu on May 20.

Ohhh but it’s Going to be Fierce.

UPDATE: with 100% of precincts Unofficially reporting to LASOS, the Top Three finishers, and their %’s, are the Same as above. ( #4, Robert Couhig, a Republican, pulled 10%.) // The total Unofficial vote for Mayor is 108,133, which at approximately 37% of the reported approximate Returnee-plus-Diaspora 290,000 Eligible is Not Bad at all, Considering.

Congratulations to Frontrunner Ray Nagin; and to Runoff Qualifier Mitch Landrieu. [Also to his lovely Sister the Senator, whose local Popularity I’m sure made all the Difference. :] May 20 will Tell the Tale.

Don’t know Mitch–hope he’s a bit more adept than Mary when it comes to his family’s wealth and connections. When Mary was asked by a DC girl why she had voted against vouchers, when her own daughter attended a private DC school, Landrieu’s response was essentially, Well, even with a voucher you couldn’t afford to attend my daughter’s school.

And, more on point, when George Stephanopoulus showed up to tour the damages of Katrina, Landrieu made sure, in the helicopter, to point out a special point of pain for her–that Katrina had flooded her summer home(no, her “camp,” we were told).

Every time George S gets in a helicopter my heart dies for a wasted morning, but that’s another story.

You also have to remember that Landrieu’s Dad was the last white mayor of New Orleans. That gave him name recognition and access to some type of political machine.

Mitch is currently the Lt. Governor of Louisiana — just an FYI.

Everything N’awlins has been through since August, and they’re asking for more of the same ol’ same ol’. Are the voters thinking Nagin will somehow gain competence overnight? Or that Mr Landrieu (I still think that sounds like the Star Trek episode where everyone in the city asks “Are you of the body?”) will be able to turn things around? Or maybe they figure either of these two is “good enough.”
