With the Wichita State Shockers tipping off against Tennessee at 3:30 PM EST, I offer the following in support of the Missouri Valley, and in my continuing attempts to annoy DrawingDead and other residents of the Volunteer State:
Once there was a team from Wichita
Lookin’ for a high seed to kill
Vols have not played like a #2 seed yet
Reckon they never will
Shocky Top, you’ll always be
Home sweet home to me
Let’s go Shocky Top
Shockin’ ol’ Tennessee
Shockin ol’ Tennessee
:)
And with that, I’m off the RenFest.
UPDATE: DrawingDead responds.
For the record, I like the Tennessee men’s team. I have nothing but respect for the job Bruce Pearl has done. Obviously, the Vols are overseeded, but that’s not a criticism of Tennessee, it’s a criticism of the selection committee. Tennessee has had a good season, worthy of a #4 or #5 seed, and if they weren’t playing a mid-major, I’d be rooting for them.
Now, the Tennessee women’s team is another story. But then, I’m from Connecticut. You can’t expect me to like Pat Summitt & co. :)

I almost laughed, and then I went and vented on my own blog. I feel better now.

Aww..nothin’ but love for ya, man.
Except when it comes to the Lady Vols. All I have to say about that is that we wouldn’t even be having a moderately serious discussion of women’s hoops without Pat Summitt.

Oh, I agree. I have a great deal of respect for Pat Summitt. I congratulated her in this space when she passed Dean Smith’s record, and again when she hit 900 wins. There’s no questioning her impact on the women’s game. But just because I respect her, doesn’t mean I have to like her. (Give me some credit, though. I’ve generally stopped called her “the devil woman,” as I used to. :)

I guess “Devil Woman” Pat and Geno make a good pair then, since he’s SATAN! ;)

LOL.
Geno rocks… though, I did have fun taunting him at the Notre Dame-UConn game at the Joyce Center last month. (I was rooting for the Irish, of course.)
“SIT DOWN, GENO!!! YOU’RE UGLY, GENO!!!”
It’s always more fun to taunt the ones you love. :)

You know, this is what’s great about college sports. You can invest so much more emotion and passion in the college games than you can in the pros. Granted, the kids come and go, but they’re supposed to do that. You can’t invest as much in a pro sports team, because you never really know what you’re gonna get. Your fave player/coach one season can be your hated rival the next.
It’s a beautiful time of year. I love it.

Agreed.
Some people prefer pro sports to college sports because of the quality of play.
I think that’s crap.I respectfully disagree. :) I’ll gladly deal with the occasional game decided by a missed free throw, missed extra point, poor clock management, or technical foul due to a lack of timeouts, when the tradeoff is the better atmosphere, emotion, loyalty, etc. Better stories, more tension, awesome Cinderellas, etc.August 11th, 2006 at 1:24:57 pm
