All right, I have a challenge for anyone who is bored at work on Friday (or otherwise has a bit of free time) and has more artistic talent than me (which is to say, any at all).
I need a logo (or logos) for this year’s Living Room Times basketball pools.
I think one logo for both pools would probably be best. Although it’s the 11th annual men’s pool and the 9th annual women’s pool, we could simply call it the “Living Room Times basketball pools: 10th anniversary edition” or something like that. That said, if you have a brilliant idea for separate logos, I’m certainly open to that.
Keep in mind, the logo(s) would probably be used on the site, and also on winners’ t-shirts (or whatever CafePress item they pick).
Other things to keep in mind:
* The official sponsor of the pools is The Living Room Times (my old unofficial high school newspaper), not BrendanLoy.com or the Irish Trojan’s Blog. They are the “Living Room Times pools.”
* That said, I’d love to incorporate “BrendanLoy.com” and/or “Irish Trojan” into the logo somehow, for branding’s sake. Maybe “The Living Room Times pools” (big text), “presented by BrendanLoy.com” (smaller text), or something like that.
* Don’t call them “NCAA Pools.” The NCAA doesn’t like that, and I don’t want to get in trouble. (Lawsuits are bad.) They’re “pools” or “basketball pools” or “college basketball pools.”
* The “10th anniversary” angle seems like a good theme to me. Perhaps “1996-2006″ could go in there somewhere. If you want to use the “__th annual,” it’s the 11th annual men’s pool and the 9th annual women’s pool. (There was no women’s pool in 1996 or 2000.)
* I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of free clip art of basketballs and stuff out there. Just sayin’.
* The pools are “moneyless,” so it wouldn’t make sense for the logo to have dollar signs or money clipart or whatever.
Submit your entries by e-mail to bloy[at]nd.edu. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, whatever. Make ‘em decent size, though, for t-shirt purposes.
Deadline is noon Sunday… though if someone sends me a logo before then, and I absolutely love it, I may just pick it on the spot and start using it. (This isn’t exactly a formal contest, more of a challenge to see if anyone can come up with something along the lines of what I’m looking for.)
The “winner,” if there is one, will receive… uh… bragging rights, credit on the blog, and if I’m ever in the same city as you, I’ll buy you a beer. :)
Oh, by the way, here is what the logo on last year’s men’s championship t-shirt looked like:

Pay no attention to the fact that I broke my own rule about using “NCAA” by including that basketball. Heh. Anyway, you can see my lack of graphic-design talent on full display. :) Top that, and you’ll be my hero.

Loy,
I wanted to remind you again what a fucking nerd you are. Quit the fanny pack.
March 10th, 2006 at 3:23:18 am
Gerry, how dare you insult my fanny pack. I wouldn’t have been able to post TEN F—ING BLOG POSTS without that fanny pack. Not TEN F—ING BLOG POSTS.

How about a picture of me, with something below my picture saying “unbeatable” or “1.000 winning percentage” or something to that effect?

Heh.

How can I send them to you?

Two quick ideas that a more able artist might, perhaps, develop for you.
One, incorporate a sectional sofa into the logo to tie in “living room” and the regional “sectionals”.
Two, call the ‘basketball pools’ something gratuitously filthy sounding, like Gentleman’s(or Ladies) Hardwood Pick-ems” :)

I have something like that set up, I just need an email to send it to. I’ll try your idea.

LaundraMatt,
While your ideas are creative, usually as far as logos are concerned, the most successful ones have always gotten the message across in the simplest of ways possible. Your idea would work better for a poster or something, but as far as how it would be used as a logo (which will be used on the website and what not), it might not translate.

Loy,
Here’s an idea for you design contest: a picture of you banging Reggie Bush.

Someone tell me what they think of these. Feedback or ways to improve would be great.

It needs some adjusting for colour specifics and size, but you’ll get the idea …
Potential LRT Logo

Dave @ 7:22 pm.
Quick suggestion, if you are going to use a picture as a background like that you should try fading it a bit so that the text stands out more. Right now because its got very bold colors the text is hard to read.

I’m not a big fan of the one with the net in the background, mostly because the text around the edges just adds too much noise.
I kind of like the idea of the basketball texture in the background, can you post a link to your source image for that or just post that image.

Thanks, guys. I’ve been in transit all day, and am now finally taking a look at these…
