PowerBook problems: a summary
Posted by on Monday, December 19, 2005 at 12:06 pm

I’ll be taking in my troubled “LemonBook” (previous posts here, here, here, here and here) to the Apple Store this afternoon. To help in explaining the myriad problems I’ve had with it, I used Microsoft Word to create this handy guide.

I’ll let you know how it goes…

UPDATE: There’s no room at the inn Genius Bar:

WTF? It’s not even 2:30 in the afternoon, and they’re open till 8:00! How can they be all booked up already? I know there’s only six shopping days left till Christmas, but jeez!

Oh, well. No Apple Store for me today. We’ll try again tomorrow… earlier.

Good luck! And I thought Apples were supposed to be problem free?!!

  2. Brendan Says:

No, all computers have problems. Apples just generally have fewer of them, and Apple users have higher standards, which means that we bitch and moan a lot about what problems DO exist. :)

  3. Becky Says:

Lame! Brendan, your computer has a crapload more problems than your Dell ever had. As a general rule of thumb, apples are less problematic, but your crap ass Powerbook is the definite exception. Every time I see it, I feel very hostile. Harumph. Stupid expensive computer being all dumb.

  4. Toni Says:

Gee I just ordered the new Ipod for my daughter for Christmas. The FedEx tracking shows it is being sent form China.

I really thought Apple products were made in the US… could there be a conection… is China not doing the job right?

  5. Toni Says:

My Sony Vaio is perfect :)

  6. David Says:

Toni, Apple does make products in America, but they also utilize alot of Asian companies too because alot of the technology is over there (like LCD’s). They also have a plant in Ireland.

And the problems Brendan (and others) have been having seem isolated to the 15″ model, so it is probably a mother board issue, not likely to affect an iPod.

  7. Colin Says:

I’ve got a 15″ PB G4 1.67Ghz (Feb 2005 revision) with no problems. I’m running 10.4.3 with all updates applied.

The rumors have been out for a while that IntelBooks are coming in Jan 2006. Hopefully those will be better :)

    Good luck!

  8. David Says:

Colin the Feb revision seems to be fine, its the later revision with the higher res screens that are having issues.

  9. Brendan Says:

Yeah Colin, the Jan/Feb 15″ model is what I want to “downgrade” to — those were fine. I can deal with the lower resolution and buying refurbished, I just want a non-defective computer!

And Becky, how soon you forget. My Dell had at least as many severe problems as my PowerBook. Remember the noisy hard drive of death?

  10. A Nun Mouse Says:

I have a Mac Mini and I think since I’ve had it — about 10 months– I’ve had to restart it twice.

It has all the power of a tower PC machine but it’s the size of a medium size book.

    It’s a sweet machine.

I want a 15″ Intel Powerbook for my next prchase though.

Plus people forget what, for me anyway, is the main advantage of a Mac: no spyware, adware, etc. And your chances of getting a virus are almost zero…..

  11. Alasdair Says:

Oh well … since no-one else has said it yet …

So you can sign up for something called “ProCare” so that you can make a reservation up to 7 days in advance … in advance, presumably, of when your system gets SO broken that you need Mac Specialist tech support assistance ?

At the risk of being ungentlemanly - WTF ???

As Marketing techniques go, this is classic Computer Associates at their best/worst/nadir depending upon with whom you are talking !

    OY gevalt !

Brendan - while I am not glad that it’s *you* having these problems, I sure am glad it’s not *me* …

And I hope the PowerBook is worth all the drama/angst/ProCare !

    (OK, OK - not-so-innocent grin)

  12. Briandot Says:

What happens when you click on ‘Done’? Does the message go away and can someone see you now? :-P

  13. Anonymous Says:

My Power Mac G4 (early 2003 model) runs perfectly. I can’t remember the last time it crashed.

    Currently running 10.4.3.

  14. A.J. Says:

My Power Mac G4 (early 2003 model) runs perfectly. I can’t remember the last time it crashed.

    Curse you!!!

Back when I worked in publishing, the only computers we had for work was the G4 and it crashes constantly, and the only reason that we didn’t switch to another OS is that most publishing softwares that we use are Mac based.

  15. Briandot Says:

Linux: ’cause rebooting is for kernel upgrades.

    uptime:

    19:33:59 up 379 days, 16:58, 1 user

  16. dcl Says:

Damn, best I ever got was 30 days, but then, it was a laptop and apple releases some sort of update about every month…

  17. David Says:

yeah those damn security and stability updates ;-)
