Click here to enter your picks in the The Irish Trojan’s Bowl Pick ‘em Contest for 2005-06!
The contest is free to enter. The primary “prize” is the respect and admiration of your peers here on BrendanLoy.com, but I am open to suggestions about a possible small, tangible prize for the winner… like maybe a personalized t-shirt or something.* [UPDATE: Or a toy shillelagh?]
Your name (first and last greatly preferred), or a readily identifiable blog-community psuedonym**, and a valid e-mail address are required to enter. Your phone number is NOT required, even though it’s listed on the entry form.
The deadline to enter is December 20, prior to kickoff of the New Orleans Bowl. After the deadline has passed, everyone will be able to see everyone else’s picks.
The scoring system is simple. There will be no “confidence ranking,” upset points, point-spread picking or any other such shenanigans. The first 12 bowls (New Orleans thru Emerald) are worth 1 point each. The next 12 bowls (Holiday thru Capital One) are worth 2 points each. The Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowls are worth 3 points each. The Rose Bowl is worth 5 points. For you mathematically challenged types, that’s a maximum total of 50 points. :) The tiebreaker is the combined score of USC and Texas in the Rose Bowl.
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at tips[at]brendanloy.com.
If you wish to change your picks after entering them, I don’t think there’s a way to edit them, but you can just enter a new set of picks, and then e-mail me and ask me to delete the previous one.
Good luck! Here again is the link to the entry page.
*And yes, Brian, I will get you your 2005 NCAA Pool championship t-shirt soon, I promise. Hehe.
**E.g., “Scientizzle,” “Boi From Troy,” “thebeef,” etc. — something that people around here know you as. (But real names, first and last, are preferred, if you’re willing. They make for easier write-ups if you win. :)

From my total points, how do you determine the winner? I assume it’s the person who gets closest to [50 plus combined SCvsTexas final score].
but, If my team loses, is that counted as minus(-) points or as zero (0)?

Roger, the winner is the person with the highest point total (so, “closest to 50,” as you said), and then IF there is a tie, the Rose Bowl combined score is used. It makes no difference who wins or loses, because you’re guessing the COMBINED score, not a margin of victory or anything like that. So, logically, who you pick to win the game has no relevance. If you predict a combined score of 80 points, and the person you’re tied with predicts a combined score of 70 points, and (heaven forbid) Texas wins the game 40-37 (combined total of 77 points), you win the tiebreaker, because 77 is closer to 80 than it is to 70.
Of course, if your team loses the Rose Bowl, it’s relatively unlikely you’d be tied for the lead in the first place, since the Rose Bowl is worth 5 points. But if it happened, that’s how it would play out.

Don’t be fooled — I won the NCAA pool and NEVER GOT MY T-SHIRT!!!
Eventually I realized it wasn’t coming, so I told Brendan to donate it to the hurricane victims, but I’m pretty sure that never happened either, between the C2s and the Harry Potter and the wedding and the catblogging and the … well, you get the picture.
Despite my sour experience, I will be entering *and winning* this pool as well. Good day.

BRENDAN,
ANY GRAPHICAL STATS OR AVERAGES AS THE CONTESTANTS ENTER THEIR PICKS?

Whoo! Another sports prediction contest at which I can make uninformed, semi-random selections! :)

Thanks for the update, Brendan. I now give this contest my full and unrestricted endorsement, as if that matters.

I believe Boise State will win the MPC Computer Bowl! Hopefully Boston College players won’t be too blinded by the freakish, dayglow blue of Bronco Stadium…

…Remember when Boston College used to be good? How f-ing sad.

They weren’t even that bad (8-3) this year. But Fredo should get used to this type of treatment in the ACC.

The blue isn’t so bad when you get down onto it. Plus, it’ll probably end up being covered in snow, and the practice facility in Boise is all nice and green so they won’t have to deal with the blue all week. Just get past the blue, the cold, the snow, BSU’s 31 game at home winning streak and Boston’s got it.

How embarrassing. Getting your ass kicked on a Smurf-blue football field.
