Delta weakening
Posted by on Friday, November 25, 2005 at 10:39 am

Tropical Storm Delta didn’t quite make it to hurricane status, and now it’s weakening.

WHS 22, NHS 13

Here’s the Hartford Courant article about Newington’s loss to Wethersfield. It, and also this article, suggest that I’m the only person who has actually done the math and realized that, as it turns out, Newington wouldn’t have made the playoffs even if they had beaten Wethersfield. Oh, well.

Happy Thanksgiving

In honor of the holiday, enjoy this glorious artistic representation of the first Thanksgiving, made by my soon-to-be sister-in-law Jen:

Heh.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 2:53 pm

Wethersfield 22, Newington 13.

WTF???

Wethersfield was 1-8 coming into the game. Newington was 7-2.

Ack!

So much for all the playoff talk…

NHS football won’t make the playoffs :(
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 1:30 pm

The CIAC scoreboard doesn’t have a Newington-Wethersfield score yet, but Fitch beat Ledyard, 17-13. That’s bad news. Also bad news: Griswold beat Plainfield and East Lyme beat Waterford. Good news: New London beat NFA and Bacon Academy beat Tourtellotte.

At present, Fitch has 1,070 points. With a win over Wethersfield, Newington would also have 1,070. So it all comes down to E.O. Smith vs. Windham. If Windham wins, Fitch makes the playoffs. If E.O. Smith wins, Newington makes the playoffs.

The Fermi-Enfield game doesn’t matter unless E.O. Smith and Windham tie, in which case a Fermi win or a tie would put Newington in the playoffs, whereas an Enfield win would put Fitch in the playoffs.

UPDATE: Windham 47, E.O. Smith 22. Dammit.

So Fitch finishes with 1,080 points. Newington can hit 1,080 as well if they beat Wethersfield and Fermi beats Enfield, but Fitch holds the tiebreaker, so the Falcons have clinched a playoff spot, and the Indians are eliminated.

So close, and yet so far…

Balloon injures 2 at Macy’s parade
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 1:23 pm

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is going ahead as planned, despite strong winds. Well, not quite as planned:

A giant balloon at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade snagged a street light near Times Square and caused part of it to fall into the crowd, injuring two people, according to police and eyewitness accounts.

Delta almost a hurricane

Tropical Storm Delta (or as I like to call it, Δ) now has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. “Delta is close to becoming a hurricane,” according to the discussion.

Exactly how many people are in that car?
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 10:03 am

Phoenix resident Candace Dickinson will have her day in court, contesting a traffic ticket she received while driving in the HOV lane. When a police officer pulled her over, he asked her, “How many people are in the car?” She said two. He said one. Dickinson was nine months pregnant at the time.

While the car pool lane clearly exists to encourage car pooling, I think Dickinson’s got a point. There are two people in her car, two beating hearts, two functioning brains. And technically, the way the law is written, her unborn child can occupy the vehicle without occupying a seat.

So, my darlings, in your turkey-induced stupor, riddle me this: should pregnant ladies qualify for the car pool lane?

Idiocy and insight

Reading The East Valley Tribune is always such an enlightening experience.

First, the idiocy: “Evolution is based on the false assumption that everything is increasing in its complexity.”

And now, the insight: “Would you buy a used car from Dick Cheney?”

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!!

My new laptop
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 4:03 am

Someone wanted to know the specs on my new “baby.” Well, here you go. It’s a 15-inch PowerBook with a 1.67 GHz processor — a PowerPC G4, obviously. It has 1 GB of RAM (in a single chip, which means I can add more later in the open slot if I want), a 100 GB hard drive, a CD- and DVD-burning SuperDrive, and a 1440 x 960 resolution screen. Oh, and its keyboard glows in the dark. And it’s really cool. Really, really cool. I’m in love. :)

And now, I’m going to bed. G’nite all! And Happy Thanksgiving! Go Indians! Beat the Eagles!

Jessica Simspon, Nick Lachey split
Posted by on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 3:49 am

The rumors were true:

A month after Us Weekly first reported on the breakup of Newlyweds Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, the couple has jointly announced an official separation. ‘After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,’ the couple tells Us in an exclusive joint statement. ‘This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.’

Ha! Like there’s a snowball’s chance in Hell of that happening…

Personally, I just hope this isn’t too much of a distraction for Lachey’s buddy Matt Leinart as he prepares for the big UCLA game! :)
