She already is a major hurricane — a Cat 4. In the NHC’s latest bulletin (1 am EDT), Avila states that sustained winds are at 150 mph with higher gusts and that they expect her to be a Cat 5 soon. She’s grown from a tropical storm to a strong Cat 4 in approximately 14 hours, with a 69 mb drop in pressure in eight hours. Un-freaking-believable. THe latest recon shows pressure at 901 mb, which makes her (pressure-wise) the fifth strongest Atlantic hurricane in recorded history. (Three of the top six have occurred this year).
