It looks like Andrew was on to something. Bryan Woods of The Storm Track e-mails:
The GFDL model is calling for an interesting development. It wants TD25 to strengthen into Category 3 hurricane Alpha east of the Bahamas. Then once Wilma crosses Florida, it merges the two storms over the Gulf Stream, tracks them up the coast, and place a Cat 2 hurricane off of Cape Cod. Food for thought!
Here is Bryan’s blog post about this possibility, complete with maps of Hurricane Wilmalpha (or whatever). Here’s the GFDL forecast for 2:00 PM Tuesday:

Is there any historical record of two named storms merging? If so, what’s the protocol for the name?

yikes! that really doesn’t look good for the East coast.
I’ve always wondered, what would happen or what would it look like if two hurricanes were to merge.. after all, it happens with galaxies..
Just storms merging in the sky right over my head is not how I’d like to find that out :)

Wasn’t the bad fraternity in Revenge of the Nerds known as the “Alpha Betas”? That’s what got me thinking about this merger.

I think they should call the storms this if they merge:
“Perfect Storm 2, Electric Boogaloo!”

Ummm … since they are both effectively rotating in the same direction, as they get within a certain distance of each other, the closing portions of their eyewalls have to be going in exactly opposite directions, and should, at least in theory cancel each other out, along with a lot of the energy of each …
Having said that, if they managed to rotate about each other, too, there might be a chance of them additively merging … but, somehow, that doesn’t ‘feel’ right … and my time for being *much* more familiar with this is 3+ decades in the past …

Massachusets should evacuate now, before it’s too late. They should also be aware that a hurricane might be approaching.
