Beam me out, Scotty

George Takei, best known for his roll as Lt (and later Captain) Hikaru Sulu from T.V.’s Star Trek has come out in an interview to be published in an upcoming issue of Frontiers, a gay interest magazine.

So do famous people come out of the closet in threes, like famous people seem to die in threes?

Wait a sec, who was the third? Or did Tom Cruise make an announcement that I haven’t heard about yet?

  2. Briandot Says:

Eh? Wow. Didn’t see that coming.

  3. Poll Says:

    Re: “Famous People”

How many people had ever heard of Sheryl Swoopes, or George Takei (by his real name) before this week?

Dammit! You beat me to this one!!! I was going to post it!!!! Darn you and your ability to stay up late enough to hear about the news and blog about it!

Seriously, though, I’ve read his autobiography (To The Stars), and there was no question of “who am I and where am I going,” that you sometimes see in closeted gays. It’s too bad that he hasn’t felt comfortable coming out before now, but I admire him for his courage to do it in his late 60s!

“there was no question of “who am I and where am I going,” that you sometimes see in closeted gays”

I am interested. Are those the types of words he used? Interesting, never noticed this before.

  6. Russell Says:

    Coming out now?

Howard Stern “outted” him years ago.

    This isn’t news

  7. Briandot Says:

And this isn’t a newspaper, so whatever. But regardless, there’s a difference between being ‘outed’ and ‘coming out’; Or at least I’d imagine Takei saying so.

  8. Angrier and Angrier Says:

Gay people don’t come out in threes. They come out when their career is on the rocks. I imagine Rip Taylor will be holding a press conference any day now.

  9. Meg Says:

Briandot, were you being sarcastic? I’m with Russell on this - Takei’s been openly gay for years.

And as far as the difference between “being” outed and “coming” out…I went to a fundraiser with Takei and his partner a few months ago (We donated about the same about as Takei and his partner, so I got to sit next to Captain Sulu, to this former Trekkie’s great glee…and my company’s horror when I “came out” as a fan). Their relationship was public knowledge, publicly *ac*knowledged, and there was nothin’ new about it.

Couldn’t help but think of this…

AA, given that Cheryl Swoopes career is at a high point, i’m fairly certain your wrong on that one.

  14. Angrier and Angrier Says:

    David-

Being successful in the WNBA is about the same as being Sulu in the Star Trek circuit. Swoopes is to Jordan what Takei is to Shatner.

  15. Russell Says:

    Briandot,

I assume you don’t beleive the only source for news is a newspaper - although your comment would suggest otherwise.

As far as the distinction between being ‘outted’, ‘coming out’ and being ‘openly gay’, I’m sure there are fine points of distinction, but the results seem the same to me. Either way, Sulu’s being gay - not that there is anything wrong with that - is not new information.

  16. David Says:

AA, you are still wrong. Your claim was that coming out is something that happens in a lowpoint in someones career. Regardless of whether she will ever be as famous as MJ, Swoopes IS at a succesful high point in her career.

  17. Andrew Leyden Says:

Did you see the episode with the “Evil Spock” in a goatee? Sulu was almost in drag he had so much makeup.

And those knowing glances he was always throwing toward Chekov.

I mean come on….it was obvious. No?

  18. Angrier and Angrier Says:

    David-

God. Nobody has a sense of humor anymore.

  19. Bill Says:

David’s just mad that Sulu “came out” before him.

  20. Alasdair Says:

My wife and I saw Mr Takei and his Significant Other at an Xmas party several years ago … the host introduced us to him … ahhh, the joys of Life in the Los Angeles area … he was basically a nice guy, as was his SO … (I actually managed not to be too much of a Trekkie which conversing) … (reminiscent grin) …

  21. David Says:

Oh, what a cutting come back Bill, you have yet again demonstrated what a valuable presence you are around here…

  22. David Says:

Alasdair, his autobiography is quite interesting, especially the parts about the Internment camps. Really makes you think.
