ND, USC football season prediction contests
Posted by on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 3:04 am

So… I was going to do this in a much more organized fashion, much earlier in the week… but Hurricane Katrina intervened, obviously. However, bottom line, I want to run a BrendanLoy.com contest for each of my two schools’ college-football seasons, USC’s and Notre Dame’s. In these contests, each contestant tries before the season starts (i.e., today or early tomorrow) to correctly predict the outcome of each and every game. The goal is not merely to predict the team’s final record correctly, but to predict each game correctly, and that is how the contest will be scored. Final record and margin of victory will be used as tiebreakers.

Here is Notre Dame’s schedule. Here is USC’s schedule. If you’re interested in entering either or both contests, simply leave a comment with your name, e-mail address, and the predicted winner and margin of victory for each game. So for example, if you’re entering the USC contest, you might say, “Hawaii: USC by 50, Arkansas: USC by 84, Oregon: USC by 117…” and so forth. :)

There is no prize… just bragging rights and glory on BrendanLoy.com. :)

A few more details on the rules. I didn’t want to clutter the homepage with this.

First of all, we’re predicting the actual winner, not picking against the spread. Just in case that wasn’t clear.

Secondly, again, the goal is to accurately predict the outcome of each game, NOT to guess the team’s final record. Thus, for example, suppose Notre Dame goes 8-3, losing to Michigan, USC and Tennessee. Someone who predicted they would go 9-2 by losing to Michigan and USC but beating Tennessee will finish ahead of someone who predicted they would go 8-3 by beating Michigan, USC and Tennessee but losing to Pittsburgh, BYU and Navy. Although the latter person correctly predicted the team’s final record of 8-3, his/her own prediction record is a paltry 5-6, whereas the former person has a sterling 10-1 prediction record, even though he/she was off by one game in predicting the team’s record. Get it? It is the contestant’s prediction record that matters most.

The predicted team record will be used, however, to break ties. Thus, someone who makes two (or four, or six, etc.) offsetting mistakes will finish ahead of someone who makes an equal number of non-offsetting mistakes. For instance, our hapless 5-6 predictor in the above scenario will finish ahead of a 5-6 predictor whose six mistakes were all the same direction (i.e., he thought Notre Dame would go 2-9).

The second tiebreaker will be combined margin of victory/defeat across the 11 games.

    Tennessee: ND by 2

    Navy: Navy by 1

    Syracuse: ND by 10

    Stanford: ND by 14

(Yes, that’s right, I have Notre Dame losing to Washington and Navy, but beating Purdue and Tennessee. I am strange.)

    USC

    Hawaii: USC by 34

    Arkansas: USC by 21

    Oregon: USC by 14

    Arizona State: USC by 3

    Stanford: USC by 21

    Cal: USC by 10

    Fresno State: USC by 14

    UCLA: USC by 28

I did that in about 2 minutes, based on pretty much nothing except wild hunches, so if I am even close to being right, it will be stunning. :)

    Washington State: USC by 14

    Stanford: USC by 7

    Cal: Cal by 3

    Fresno State: USC by 17

    UCLA: UCLA by 7

Please note: USC has a tremendously easy schedule for a team with the title of defending champion. My guess is that they’ll fall into such a rut beating (relatively) easy teams that by the time they actually have to face Cal and UCLA, they might not know what to do with themselves. If they played Cal and UCLA earlier in the season, I might have had USC winning those games …

    Notre Dame:

    Pittsburgh: Pitt by 14

    Michigan: ND by 7

    Michigan State: MIState by 14

    Washington: ND by 10

    Purdue: ND by 14

    USC: USC by 10

    BYU: ND by 17

    Tennessee: ND by 3

    Navy: Navy by 10

    Syracuse: ND by 12

    Stanford: ND by 6

    And for good measure …

    Maryland

    Navy: Navy by 7

    Clemson: MD by 10

    WVU: WVU by 14

    Wake Forest: MD by 13

    Virginia: MD by 7

    Temple: MD by 20

    VT: VT by 17

    Florida State: FSU by 14

    UNC: MD by 3

    BC: BC by 6

    NCState: NCState by 7

Yep, another dismal year for the Terrapins. I just know we’re gonna lose to Navy on Saturday, and I will have driven to Baltimore (the game is being played at M&T Stadium, the home of the Ravens) for a loss. And the idea that we can beat the ‘Noles on the road is laughable. Even though we play the Mountaneers, Eagles, and the Hokies at home this year, I’m not going to hold my breath about those games, either. We’ll be lucky to go the 5-6 I see this year.

  10. Andrew Says:

Funny to hear all the dissing on USC’s schedule. While Notre Dame certainly has one of the tougher schedules in college football year in and year out, I find it interesting that Sports Illustrated picks our schedule as one of the toughest in the nation. Let’s see, we play 6 home games and 6 away games. How does that compare to teams like LSU and Ohio State, which play 7-8 home games and 4 away games? We are @ND and have fucla at home, which is always tougher than ND at home and fucla at the Rose Bowl. We play the three toughest teams in the Pac-10 (besides USC) on the road (Oregon, Cal, ASU). Whereas Cal plays a team like Sacramento State, we’re playing Fresno State. So, don’t give me any of this weak schedule bullshit.

  15. alphadog Says:

Andrew, how in the hell do you figure that Weis’ pro experience wont translate into success in CFB? The converse is definitly true (Spurrier), but this is ridiculous. Its like saying the Patriots cant beat USCum. Illogical.

Will ND go undefeated, no. Will ND compete for the title, no. Will they be a much improved team bc of Weis, yes.

  16. alphadog Says:

Also, if you truly believe Weis will have a rough introduction to CFB, wouldnt the same be true for Wanks-that at Pitt? Only, he sucked in Chicago, sucked in MIA. At least Weis had a good run in the NFL. I think you should revise your predictions.

    Go Irish.

  19. Andrew Says:

It’s got nothing to do with Weis’ supposed offensive genius. Pete Carroll’s first year at USC was 6-6, with the team coming off a 5-7 season. Similarly, Notre Dame is coming off a bad season, loses a lot of key defensive players, and will likely continue to struggle at least through this year. Next year may be a different story, with Brady Quinn having a full year under his belt in Weis’ system. Remember Carson Palmer had trouble adapting to Norm Chow until his second season under Chow.

I predict Pitt will be alright because it’s easier to come in and tighten up the defense right away than it is to install an offense. Weis may be an offensive genius, but it will take minimum half the season to get there, and the ND defense is a big unknown with a lot of inexperienced players at key positions. With that kind of schedule, I see ND struggling, but I think Pitt will be alright provided Wannstedt (sp?) at Pitt doesn’t tinker with the offense significantly. The Pitt QB is much further along than is the ND QB.

ND picked a bad year to rebuild. It’s going to be brutal for them this year, just like last year was for Nebraska.

Andrew, puh-leeze. USC has to face such powerhouses as Fresno State, Arkansas, and Stanford. My God! How ever will they survive?!?!?

I mean Maryland has a tougher schedule this year, having to play the ‘Noles, BC, and UNC in back-to-back weeks. Not to mention VT and Navy. The only “easy” game we have this year is against Temple! We don’t even have the luxury of playing Duke anymore!

Andrew, even if your precious Trojans go undefeated this year, who will they have beaten? Almost no one of any great consequence. If (when) they win the Rose Bowl, they will have won one tough game.

  37. Mike Says:

nug, you do realize you made mutually contradictory predictions, right? It seems unlikely that USC and ND will both beat the other by 14 points during the same game…

  38. David Says:

too late to enter, but just like to add my one prediction

    UW vs Notre Dame

    UW by 7

(oh yeah and USC will threepeat, losing to MAYBE cal)

  39. David Says:

Josh, Fresno State might not be a traditional power house but they are a tough team these days, and the Pac-10 is one of the toughest conferences because you have a lot of teams on par with each other, which leads to each team losing a few each year and missing out on better rankings.

That may be, but when USC plays teams like Oklahoma, Texas, and Auburn for their out-of-conference games, then I’ll grant them the title of “NCAA Champions.”

Without playoffs, I’m going to pick on USC until they get a tougher schedule. Period.

  41. Brendan Says:

Josh, I’m not going to argue that the Pac-10 is the nation’s toughest conference. But…

when USC plays teams like Oklahoma, Texas, and Auburn for their out-of-conference games, then I’ll grant them the title of “NCAA Champions.”

Umm… USC did play Auburn on its out-of-conference schedule in 2002 and 2003, beating them handily both times, including once at Auburn when Auburn was in the Top 10 and considered a legitimate national-title contender. And Oklahoma? They were on USC’s schedule last year. It didn’t go well for the Sooners. So get a grip. USC’s schedule may not be the toughest schedule in the nation (nor do they have the easiest, by any means), but to claim they don’t deserve the championships they won the last two years is ludicrous. At most, you can argue that Auburn should have been a co-champion in 2004-05, as LSU was in 2003-04. I will agree with you that Auburn wuz robbed, that we should have a playoff so they would have had the chance to play USC on the field (and lose to them). But under the system as it not stands, you cannot argue that USC didn’t earn those titles, or at least co-titles, without revealing yourself as a hopeless anti-Pac-10 partisan.

  42. Brendan Says:

P.S. Speaking of teams with oh-so-tough out-of-conference schedules… I trust Texas, a team you cited above, got a much-needed tune-up against powerhouse Louisiana-Lafeyette yesterday. It should get them ready for the hard battle against Rice.
