As it seems that everyone will have their chance to investigate Katrina, Congress has at least given some details. Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) and House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), joined by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), have annouced a fairly abitious timetable, stating that the joint investigative committee will “report its findings to Congress no later than February 15 next year.” I wouldn’t say Frist is exactly my favorite guy, but at least he gets something here:
“Having been on the ground and seen the failures of the system’s approach, the failure in appropriate planning — yes, federal government; yes, state government; yes, local government — but the call for people’s heads early on almost, to me, misses the root cause of the problem.”
Pelosi then immediately called for FEMA director Michael Brown to be fired, and blamed Bush for appointing the failed horsie show manager in the first place. :)

Don’t forget - Frist is running for President, so he’s going to try to make a good impression.

I have a lot more respect for Frist after seeing a picture, buried in a slideshow of Katrina devastation shots, of Frist volunteering in the airport hospital.
He hadn’t announced he was going (at least loud enough to be heard), and stories weren’t being written about it - it took me by surprise. My first reaction is “is that Senator Frist with a stethescope around his neck?” Nice to see his MD go to good use.

What does “abitious” mean? :-)

Andrew - it means that the thing - in this case, the timetable, reinforces spelling errors in an increasingly negative or bad way … qv “abitious roomer” …

Stories were written about Frist while he was caring for evacuees in New Orleans, but his story got lost in the crowd of other stories. I did read a comment in some blog criticizing Frist for his effort, accusing him of being hypocritical.
