BBC Breaking News Alert: “Explosions rock the New Orleans riverfront, according to reports, although the cause of the blasts is not yet known.”
UPDATE: There’s a building on fire, according to CNN’s reporter on the scene. Near a bunch of train cars in the vicinity of the French Quarter. Fire Department may not be able to get to the burning building, because they’ll be shot at by the insurgents looters.

Why levees break ?
http://www.hochwasser-special.de/FAQs/deichbruch.htm
The text is in german, but the animation&pictures are quite clear.
Main difference between the shown levee to the NO ones, is that NOs have been raised with concrete walls.
The concrete walls sustain only if the earthen part is in good shape. As it seems the earthen part was weakend by water overflowed the levees. A going on problem is that other segments of the earthen levee system could be harmed through all the water and break down within days / weeks or even month. Levee system are quite complex and they have to be watched sensitively.
Sorry for my strange english.

“they’ll be shot at by the insurgents looters.”
I never quite understood why the Iraqi “insurgents” or whatever were called “dead-enders.” It seems more apropos for the looters of New Orleans. I really hope they all don’t end up dead. But if something doesn’t happen soon…

This wasn’t a result of looters - it was an explosion at a chemical depot.
I understand and sympathize with your frustration at the looters, but not everything that is happening in New Orleans at the moment is their fault.

They are being shot at by terrorists, plain and simple. Criminals, terrorists, thugs–anyone shooting at first responders is part of the near-inhuman dregs of mankind.

Did I say the fire was the “result of looters”? No. I didn’t say anything about the cause of the fire. I said that the “Fire Department may not be able to get to the burning building, because they’ll be shot at by the…looters.” This was something that was reported on CNN, based on what Fire Department officials were telling the reporter. That the cause of the fire was a chemical explosion obviously does not contradict that report, as the report had nothing to do with the cause of the fire.
