The crisis continues
Posted by on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 7:10 pm

“Numerous dead bodies” at the convention center, according to the New Orleans police chief, being interviewed by Geraldo.

“At least 30,000 people” at the center, chief says. (I’m not sure how credible I think that number is.) “When dark comes, it’s going to be a very volatile situation. We need some relief immediately. … We need buses now.”

Also, according to O’Reilly, the Navy found 80 people dead in a nursing home today, probably because they all drowned when the flood waters were initially rising.

UPDATE: The 159th fighter wing out of Bell Chase, LA is coming in now with medical supplies, according to Geraldo.

“This is Dante’s Inferno, Bill. There’s no way to sugar-coat it. This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in a civilized nation.”

well this is rich…about Nagin at convention center..

“…we get word that Mayor Nagin (h)was got friends hotel rooms (kicking others out) and then let them cut in line when the buses came. Someone’s going to have to get off his you know what and answer for a whole lot when some of the water clears, regardless of how much he wants to scream and spread the “g**d*mn” blame. ”

  2. simishag Says:

ok, i just watched geraldo, and he seemed a bit… sensationalist? “this place is going to blow!”

not to say he’s wrong, necessarily, but from the camera shots, the situation seems, at the very least, reasonably under control.

maybe geraldo’s been in the sun a bit too long.

  3. Doug Dever Says:

Typical Geraldo nonsense… why anyone talks to that man, I’ll never understand.

  4. Brendan Says:

I’m not going to defend Geraldo, but based on what the police chief was saying, I don’t think it’s “nonsense.” Too bad they don’t have a better reporter there, though.

  5. simishag Says:

this reminds me of a funny (if macabre) story…

my fiancee and i were talking on sunday about the crazy weather reporters, and how every time there’s a hurricane, we practically pray that one of the reporters just gets blown away in the wind, or decapitated by flying debris, or something equally crazy on live tv.

for geraldo, we decided the craziest thing he could do would be to report from a boat in the middle of the ocean as the eye passes over. perhaps even a shot of geraldo clinging to a buoy for dear life. “YOU CAN HEAR THE BUOY CLANGING IN MY MICROPHONE!!!”

i know, too soon. just had to share.

  6. peapies Says:

Brendan…you’ve instalanched on the bus post

  7. ChrisG Says:

So much to do, so little time for so many, and the idiots, I agree with you about the mayor now by the way, and I was NOT impressed by the police chief either, …..the idiots mostly in the highest jobs, they have neither accepted responsiblity nor

really made an immediate committment to do ALL that can be done. But in time, hopefully this will be a learning experience. Just that it will be too late for many people unfortunately.

It is good to hear about the airlines

all coming in to evac people, and to hear the repairs on the levees continue and to see the food and water finally reaching the convention center. Now I hope the planning is going on for what to do with all the people who get out, and how to give them a chance to work for their restoration, if there is going to be one, of New Orleans.

And I cannot emphasize enough, health issues, health issues, health issues, not only in NO but anywhere the evacuaees are going and have gone.

And Please President and Mrs. Bush,

go home we are NOT impressed by your grandstanding, nor that of the other politicians, the only place for a governemnt official is at their desk or performing useful duties. GET OUT OF THE WAY and that goes for Anderson Cooper and all the other media heads,

news is news, and facts, not your endless personal reactions.

We need clarity and charity not

performances. Personal opinion, and I am getting weary of the unreality of this all. Several generations ago, even 10 years ago this all would have been handled very very diferently.

I continue to pray and hope for the best. And thanks Brendan, for all your work and for the great story on the busses, very good point indeed.

  8. Nessie Says:

Geraldo is a joke. He was too busy grandstanding to even properly listen to those he was ostensibly interviewing, or even get his facts straight.

The camera was only showing a small portion of the convention center, but things appeared reasonably calm. Geraldo and the NOLA PD person were the ones worked up.

Geraldo seemed to be intentially trying to incite a riot. I’m surprised Bill O’Reilly did not cut him off.

  9. callmemickey Says:

ahhh geraldo.. im suprised they let him anywhere near a microphone and tense situations after the debacle with the troop locations..

    gotta love the mustache though!

  10. Christine Jennings Says:

I have followed this incredible forum since the day of the storm and I’ve held off commenting until now.

I saw first-hand the effects of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. So many people assumed and TRUSTED that there was some sort of organized response team ready to act. People waited for days with no water, no electricity… That was sixteen years ago…

The shameful conditions and the needless loss of life since Katrina hit the coast could have been prevented by having a worst-case scenario plan IN PLACE.

If we can’t react to a natural disaster, one that we could see coming, I shudder to think what will happen if there is a wide-spread terrorist attack.

I am writng, e-mailing, and telephoning my Senators and Representatives today to demand that this critical national health and safety issue be addressed - IMMEDIATELY.

It is said that one letter from a constituent represents the opinion of 200-300 people in the view of an elected official.

    http://www.senate.gov

    http://www.house.gov

We each have a duty, and a responsibility to each other, to demand that a national disaster plan be developed and put into place.

  11. jm Says:

I was just reading through the Geraldo comments and its the first laugh I’ve had in days. Thanks everyone.

  12. Doug Dever Says:

Brendan, I didn’t mean to imply the information passed along was nonsense… More that it was more of the typical Geraldo “this is the worst [insert event here] ever” routine, topped with a good heaping of the melodramatic. That it happens to fit in this situation is more happenstance than anything else.

  13. Brendan Says:

Yeah… understood. Geraldo is an ass. :)

  14. Mad Max: Beyond Superdome Says:

Geraldo may be an ass. It is apparent, though, that the military caravan made its grand stage entrance to coincide with Bush’s arrival and has since left, leaving the people at the Convention Center with no idea what to do. How do I know? It’s FOX, of all networks, reporting this.

Just another day of goat fucks. At least Bush got his photo-op hugging one pre-positioned GOP-supportive homeless gal before climbing back into Air Force 1 and flying off to his Ivory Tower.

  15. Peter Evans Says:

Man! I never heard of Geraldo before but he seems like one of the characters out of the UK’s best ever comedies - the news show parody, “The Day Today”

Anchorman Chris Morris: “So, Primeminister John Major lamping the queen in the face. Pretty huge stuff, Sparacus?”

Correspondent Sparacus: “It’s bigger than that, Chris, it’s large. If you’ve got a history book at home, throw it out, it’s worthless. History books now, will have to be rewritten.”

Chris: “Really? What will they say?”

Sparacus: “They’ll simply say that John Major punched the Queen in the face. Everything else will be a footnote.”

Chris: “We’re running out of time. Can you sum it up in a sentence?”

    Sparacus: “No.”

    Chris: “A word?”

    Sparacus: “Muwaaaahhgh!”

Chris: “And now an interview with IRA deputy leader Rory O’Connell, who under BBC Broadcasting restrictions under the Terrorist Act, has to inhale helium to subtract credibility from his statements…”

I guess Geraldo’s world is a bit like that one. Full of hyperbole, interviewing people and making the cry, and basically barely suppressing a grin as he wallows in human misery and feigns being moved by the horror of it all? (That the fella? I hate such people)

  16. Mad Max: Beyond Superdome Says:

the news show parody, “The Day Today”

Sounds like the Daily Show in the U.S.

  17. Trer Says:

FOX needs to can Geraldo (They got one of my favs Bill Hemmer now), I turn the channel whenever I see him. HE IS NOT A JOURNALIST, JOURNALIST DON’T REPORT FICTION FOR SELF-PROMOTION.

  18. Trer Says:

Are we sure Geraldo is truly at the Convention Center?

  19. SAHMmy Says:

I guess we all know now why no relief or supplies made their way to the SuperDome and Convention Center, don’t we?

The Governor of Louisiana REFUSED to allow the Red Cross to bring desperately needed food and water because they didn’t want to ENCOURAGE anyone else to come there. They didn’t want anyone to stay so Blanco figured if she made everyone MISERABLE enough (through denial of food, water and medicines) they would leave!

But this is FEMA’s fault? This is Bush’s fault?
