South Bend gas prices soar

Martin’s Supermarket: count on us for service and… savings?

Alas, it’s the same story across the street at Speedway. Note the difference between yesterday (left) and today (right):

I do believe this is the first time that I’ve ever seen, with my own eyes (not in a picture on the news from some other city), a sign showing that regular unleaded costs more than $3.00 a gallon.

  1. B. Minich, PI Says:

    I, too, have seen this.

Here in Maryland, not all gas stations have broken that barrier. However, if they have not, they have gotten darn close.

I usually get gas at a place near work which is 10-20 cents cheaper than the gas near where I live. I will be surprised if that goes above $3 per gallon unless the rest of the country starts pusing $3.50 or $4. I won’t be surprised if the prices flirt with $3.

  2. Ironman Says:

Topped off both cars today. Widespread net rumors of gas shortages in the SE, so figured why wait.

Exxon Rte 5, North Haven CT 2.99

Mobil Rt 10 Cheshire, 2.71 (musn’t have gotten the memo)

  3. Sergio Says:

Prices have reached $3.49 in my neighborhood (Edison & Ironwood). There was a local news report Wednesday investigating the significant differences in fuel prices between stations that are not very far away from each other.

  4. ben jarrell Says:

I friend of mine (who evac’d with me, and just recently headed off to Atlanta) reports that all gas stations in Atlanta are now sold out, and that prices were between $4 and $6 a gallon… He said he tried to go to 13 gas stations this afternoon to fill up his sisters car, to no avail.

  5. WK Says:

Outside Chicago I saw 3.39 posted on stations that are considered “cheap”. I can only imagine what BP and Shell will look like in the morning.

  6. Todd Says:

    Yep …

(KUTV) ALTLANTA, Georgia Gasoline prices were climbing out of control Wednesday in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Gasoline in Atlanta, Georgia was selling for nearly $6 a gallon.

Rampant rumors of gas shortages have people lining up for blocks at stations and prices surging by the hour.

Most states reported $3 gas. Analysts said price increases nationwide probably wouldnít stop until gas hit $4 per gallon.

Ok - I’m going out to top off the ol’ S.U.V. right now…

  7. SPJ Says:

Here in southern Arizona, gas is a “mere” $2.75/gal on average. The highest I saw was at a couple of Circle Ks, which posted $2.88/gal for regular unleaded.

Incidentally, you can report gasoline price gouging at the following DOE site:

  8. AJ Says:

Well, this is one of the few times that I’m glad I’m living in So. Cal. Apparently, because of the special CA blend in our gasoline, prices in CA are not affected by the hurricane. All of our gases are refined in CA.

  9. Deanne Says:

AJ, I hope for your sake that is true!

  10. beloml Says:

Still, gasoline costs virtually the same in real dollars as it did in 1970. We are the beneficiaries of artificially low-priced gasoline, not the sudden victims of price spikes.

  11. Kevin Says:

concur with AJ. On the other hand, when one of our refineries goes offline, we’re screwed even if there isn’t a spike somewhere else.

Regular is 2.99 at the station near me, but that’s usually about 10 cents more than most stations. (I’m in san diego)
