Mayor Nagin has finally ordered everyone out.
“The storm surge will most likely top our levee system,” he says.
The live footage of cars streaming out of the city on both side of the interstate, with the Superdome and the city skyline in the background, superimposed on CNN’s split-screen with the mayor and the governor ordering everyone out of the city, is really very, very eerie, strikingly apocalyptic.

We left 2 am. Waiting & watching from Baton Rouge. Nowhere near far enough to escape effects but probably far enough to avoid being killed.

Any storm surge predictions for northshore of lake?

Not much of a nap, was it?
You’re doing great work here, Brendan. Hopefully your website can hold up to the Instalanche. :-)
Get a little shut-eye, eh?

Yeah, I was about to take my nap when I saw that Nagin about to hold his press conference.

Holy crap could this be bad…

Are people planning on staying at the SuperDome?? I saw a Discovery channel special on it the other day and I seem to recall it could withstand a direct hit by a Cat 5 hurricane. I wouldn’t want to test it though.

Storm surge northshore from 14-18 feet.
The Dome is open only to Special Needs evacuees.
But this thing is getting worse with each advisory, and my information is old.

What are they doing about the thousands of homeless and poor people in New Orleans? How are they supposed to evacuate?

I just saw a report about people who can’t afford transportation out of New Orleans. Many of them have little children. I guess their only option is the Superdome.
If anyone is still there, carpooling some of these people out of town wouldn’t be a bad idea.

My husband was in the Navy in New Orleans, and let me tell you, this is BAD. Tomorrow, the City of New Orleans is going to be completely destroyed. And there’s SUPPOSED to be buses and trains taking all the poor and infirm out of the city in a situation like this- Nagin has really blown it.

Nagin’s intentions are correct, but he blew it by waiting far too long. What he announced this morning, he should have announced yesterday morning. And I’m not just saying that in hindsight — scroll down, and you’ll see that I was assuming Friday night that evacuations would be ordered Saturday morning. And they should have been! I am very worried that people are going to be stuck on the highways when the weather gets bad. Tropical storm force winds are perhaps eight hours away.
