Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd has died. Crown Prince Abdullah, who has been effectively running the country since Fahd’s stroke a decade ago, is now officially the king. (Here are the Wikipedia pages on Fahd and Abdullah.)

This is SO unimportant news. Everyone knows that monarchs are just figureheads anymore…oh wait…

  3. David Says:

yeah the real power is behind the throne, like Carl Rove and Dick Cheney ;-)

  4. Andrew Says:

Dude, for the jillionth time, it’s Karl Rove, not Carl.

  5. David Says:

    Sorry

  6. Alasdair Says:

Andrew - but isn’t it ‘David” and not “Dude” ? (grin)

Joe - and here I sat, thinking that you had a direct ancestral connection to the Auld Saud …

    (mallarding, grinning)

Oh, that poor King Abdullah. I’m so sad. Inconsolable, really. Of all the fat, decadent, strongman Arab tyrants using religion as a devious device to oppress their own people by directing their hate at foreign oppression, he was my favorite.

  8. King Abdullah Says:

Hey! That’s a filthy lie! I’m not fat.

  9. Brendan Says:

Casey, I think you meant King Fahd. He’s the one who died; Abdullah is his half-brother, who is now king. Of course, the fact that they’re indistinguishable is sort of your point, isn’t it? :)

  10. Casey Says:

Oops, yes, King Fahd. My bad. I was looking at the wrong card in my “Tasteless Arab Despots and the Harims that Love Them” collector’s set.
