Microsoft today unveiled the official name of its next version of Windows, which until now has been referred to by its code name Longhorn.
“We each have our own unique view or vista of this digital world. Windows Vista is going to bring more clarity to that,” said Greg Sullivan, group product manager at Microsoft.
Microsoft has taken some ribbing over the Longhorn name, especialy in comparison with competitor Apple computer’s naming their OS releases after members of the big cat family.
Developers will recieve the first beta version by August 3rd, with the OS scheduled to be released late next year.

I never thought I’d see the day when David Kreutz would be wishing “long li[f]e” to a Microsoft OS. :)

Indeed, a surprisingly unbiased report about the Microsoft OS from a known Apple partisan. Color me impressed.

Yay — a whole new generation of Blue Screens of Death.

Well Brian, I can’t say I’ve ever dealt with the Blue Screen of Death for the four years I’ve been running on XP, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

Well Andrew, count yourself lucky. It happens on everything from ATMs to PCs to XBoxes (rather, greenscreening) to Navy ships.

Being a support of Apple and a critic of Microsoft for the merits of the system does not make me a partisan, and well… I’ve been wondering whether to mention it or not, but just so you know Andrew I work for Microsoft.

What? They let Apple aficionados work for Microsoft?!? But MicroShaft is the Evil Empire–what are they thinking letting agents of the Good and True work for them?!?!?!?

As I recall, Mr. small-government, low-taxes conservative, you were working for the government for a while there, getting paid with taxpayer money… and now you’re working for a company that gets much of its business from the government, so much of your paycheck still comes from taxpayer money… so I wouldn’t talk. :)

Sure they let Apple lovers work there, I mentioned it in my interview in fact. My criticisms of Microsoft come from factual analysis and knowledge, not blind fanaticism. Besides, if i’m lucky i’ll get the chance to work in the Mac Buisness Unit someday.

Well Brendan, the fact is even small-government, low-taxes conservatives believe in some government, and official representation and national defense are as basic government necessities as you can get. Of course, when I officially worked for the government, I certainly got paid like a low-tax, small-government conservative, which is more or less why I stopped working for them.
