To the moon, Alice

More than once, the thought has occurred to me: “Man, it would be cool if there was a webcam on the Moon.” I mean, seriously, put an iSight up there, and rig it with some sort of long-distance Internet connection, and it could broadcast a live picture of the Earth, as seen from the lunar surface, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. How cool would that be?

I’ve generally kept this idea to myself, but I love the panache of this guy, who had the same thought and decided he should write NASA an e-mail about it:

Subject: Webcam.

Given the amount of sunlight that hits the moon (for solar power), and the ability to get telemetry back from there (as proven with the Apollo moon shots), why isn’t there a webcam on the moon?

I mean, it doesn’t even have to be a great quality one. Just a picture…. maybe updated once an hour even…. just something.

(Sorry, but the question came to me tonight while watching the eclipse, and wondering what it looked like from there.)

Just curious…..

Thanks,
Lester

LOL!

Of course, the answer to Lester’s question is simple: it’s because we haven’t visited the Moon since long before the web was invented (and with it, webcams). But that can be remedied! President Bush, are you listening? Forget about Social Security and Iraq and the terrorists. This should be a top priority! “We will put a webcam on the moon in this decade and do the other things…” :)

P.S. And then, if there was a webcam on the Moon, I could have a Moon-webcam widget on my Dashboard! Wheee!! :)

    I’d watch it. :)

This is what the amateur rocket clubs should do as their eventual goal. :)

Well, do you remember the real reason why there will never be a true British pub on the Moon ?

    “No atmosphere!”

Actually, given the lack of a heat-retaining atmosphere, I would expect such a camera to be *very* bl**dy cool, you twit ! (grin)
