The Volokh Conspiracy recently unearthed yet another example of a politician saying something stupid. Today’s edition is brought to you by Rick Santorum, who compared Senate Democrats to Adolf Hitler.
Some of you may recall Santorum’s verbal diarrhea after the Supreme Court declared a Texas sodomy law unconstitutional.
Yet despite my utter dislike of the man, I think that attempting to name the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex after him is a bit crude. Humorous, but crude.

The Sun’s front page is drawing fire:
The U.S. military on Friday condemned a British newspaper’s decision to print photographs of a captive Saddam Hussein, including one showing him in his underwear. …
A statement by the U.S. military in Baghdad said the photos violated military guidelines “and possibly Geneva Convention guidelines for the humane treatment of detained individuals.”
It said the source of the photos was unknown, but they were believed to have been taken more than a year ago. …
The military said it was “aggressively” investigating to determine who took the pictures.
“We take seriously our responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all detainees,” the statement said.
There is fear of a backlash.
UPDATE (BY BECKY): As irony sits in the corner watching like a petulant child, Muslim protesters throughout the world demonstrate that they have not yet attained the legal conceptualization of Hammurabi. I mean, Hammurabi was such a big deal because he had an idea of balance. You take my eye, I’ll take your eye, instead of you take my eye and I’ll kill you and your entire family. Ya think that concept will sink in some day?

Speaking of catblogging:
Why is it that members of Congress have less capacity to work together than do an equal number of house cats?
But you know, I’m pretty sure if Bill Frist and Harry Reid duked it out on the floor of the Senate, they wouldn’t be nearly as cute as Sasha and Butter.

Today’s edition of Friday catblogging is all about Butter. For example, Butter sleeping on the aquarium light…
…Butter sleeping on Becky’s pajamas…
…and Robbie eating Butter! Er, eating peanut butter, that is:
Okay, so the last pic doesn’t exactly fit in with the whole catblogging concept, but you gotta admit, it is cute. :)

Congrats to my honorary sister Kim Stone, who won the Book Award, the Young Writers Finalist Award, the silver medal in Latin 4, and the Chamber Choir Artist of the Year Award at yesterday’s Newington High School awards ceremony. (Hat tip: her justifiably proud mama.)
Later in the day, Kim and her tennis doubles partner Melissa Nolan qualified for the state tournament as they won their match 6-0, 6-2, part of Newington’s overall 7-0 rout of Southington. The Indians (who are still coached by the great C. Stephen Ludlow, former AP English teacher extraordinaire and Eustacia Vye’s biggest fan) wrapped up the conference championship recently, a fine achievement of which Kim, as one half of the #1 doubles team, was obviously a big part.
Kim will be attending Southern Maine University in the fall. More immediately, her senior prom is this weekend. If she’ll let me, perhaps I’ll have a photo to share with y’all eventually. :)
I’ll be attending her graduation in June, so I will definitely have pictures of that to share. :)
P.S. It seems like only yesterday that she was graduating from middle school… they grow up so fast (*sniff sniff*)…

Believe it or not, the first hurricane of the season is upon us. Hurricane Adrian is now over El Salvador and is quickly heading to the Caribbean, whereupon it will be redesignated an Atlantic storm and head northeast to Cuba.
Is this a sign of Global Warming? The Apocalypse? Something is surely awry….
Oh yeah, that’s what it is–Brendan failed to be the first person on the internet covering the storm in breadth and detail!
For shame!
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith made $16.5 million in midnight showings yesterday. That’s more than double what Return of the King made in its midnight showings (about $8 million), and more than the combined midnight-showing totals for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones (about $6 million each).
It’s too early to say for sure, but according to one Fox executive, “there’s a very good chance of breaking the single day record.”

Drudge is headlining the front page of tomorrow’s Sun, which claims to have exclusive pictures from inside Saddam Hussein’s prison cell:
The report also features this picture, apparently of Saddam getting caught in his spider hole:

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is out.
Alas, I probably won’t get to watch it until Saturday, thanks to all these computer shenanigans, trips to and from Chicago, and whatnot. Argh. So for the love of Yoda, don’t tell me what happens! The suspense is killing me… personally, I think Anakin is going to resist the Dark Side, and he and Padmé will live happily ever after… :)

I would like to take this opportunity to give a very long-overdue shout-out to Kristy, who, several months ago, randomly decided to give me a 120-gigabyte external FireWire hard drive that she had lying around her apartment (!!).
That hard drive has improved my life in so many ways, but never moreso than right now, as it has given me somewhere to put all of my documents, photos, MP3s and porn other important personal files while I take my PowerBook to Chicago to have the Apple Store geniuses wipe its hard drive clean and install Tiger on a clean slate.

I’m heading to the Apple Store in Chicago tomorrow (and Friday) to take advantage of the free “Tiger Tune-Up” that Apple is offering to new OS X 10.4 buyers. (My PowerBook desperately needs a thorough cleaning, among other things.) That’s why blogging has been light today — I’ve been busy backing up all my files and such — and that’s why it will likely continue to be light tomorrow and Friday.

Howard Dean apparently believes that, while Osama bin Laden is entitled to a presumption of innocence, Tom DeLay is not.
You may recall this quote from Dean in 2004: “I’ve resisted pronouncing a sentence before guilt is found. I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best…in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials.”
Contrast that to what he said this past Saturday about DeLay: “I think Tom DeLay ought to go back to Houston, where he can serve his jail sentence.” Hmm… when it comes to “resist[ing] pronouncing a sentence,” I guess resistance is futile, eh, Howard?
Lest anyone doubt whether he is prejudging DeLay’s guilt, Dean elaborated yesterday: “[T]he law is closing in on Tom DeLay. … I think he’s guilty … of taking trips paid for by lobbyists, and of campaign-finance violations during his manipulation of the Texas election process.”
It’s good to know the national chairman of the Democratic Party has his priorities in order when it comes to the criminal justice system.
