The Passion of the Weis
Posted by on Monday, February 28, 2005 at 2:44 pm

New football coach Charlie Weis once again spoke at halftime of an ND basketball game yesterday. As I was leaving the game, I overhead a male student, apparently responding to a female student’s disparaging comment about Weis’s speech, saying the following:

“Charlie Weis is God! You can’t disrespect God!

And here I thought you had to at least win a national championship in order to attain God-like status. But apparently, Notre Dame football coaches are divine until proven mortal. Heh.

I don’t even think I could win 4 super bowls.

    I worship Charlie…

  2. Brian Says:

It must be a Catholic thing. Maybe he’s not God per se, but merely the saint of college football. How exactly does one get fasttracked for canonization?

  3. Joan Osborne Says:

Apparently He is one of us!

  4. lex icon Says:

The Irish sure have gone through a bunch of gods since their last MNC.

  5. David Says:

No Brian its not a Catholic thing. Clearly your grasp of religion is lacking.

  6. John B. Says:

Ty was God too…that first season.

I have lived in S. Bend all of my life, and I have heard this type of talk all of the time by fans and alumni. If Weis, God forbid, loses a few games, you will hear people calling for his head…I guarantee it.

I am all for success and winning, but let’s keep a little perspective, people.

  7. Brian Says:

David: I was making a funny, in the spirit of the original post. Relax.

  8. David Says:

Brian, maybe if you weren’t so enthusiastic about attacking religion in your other posts, or if Catholocism weren’t always such a big target around here I might see it as a joke.
