From The Onion:
BRULE RIVER, WI—The appearance of a shiny, bobbling object in the water of the Brule, just upstream of the big sunken oak stump, is generating considerable interest among members of the fish community, river sources reported Monday.

Newington High School’s new principal says things are going well so far.
In other NHS news, Class of 1997 graduate — and chamber-choir diva idol — Genna Griffith had a homecoming of sorts last week, as she performed at the Newington Veterans Hospital with the USO Troupe of Metropolitan New York.
Apparently Genna, an extremely talented performer who was the object of many guys’ affections when she was at NHS, has had quite a busy three years since graduating from American U. in 2001:

Bush’s lead over Kerry is down to 12% in Indiana (from 19%), according to a new state poll. The president still has a majority, though: 52% to 40%.
Republican Mitch Daniels (who has been running a bunch of shameless TV ads comparing himself to Ronald Reagan) leads Democrat Joe Kernan in the race for governor, 43% to 38%.
But Democratic incumbent Evan Bayh is crushing Republican Marvin Scott in the U.S. Senate race, 65% to 21%.

From MSNBC’s Scarborough Country:
JOE SCARBOROUGH: You ran for president. It’s easy for me to talk about media bias, but did you see media bias in 1996? And if so, how widespread is it?
DOLE: It’s widespread. I mean, you look at the number of stories written about or on the three big networks at night and “The New York Times,” “The L.A. Times,” “The Washington Post,” all the big newspapers. How many dozens of stories they’ve reported about George Bush and the National Guard, and now they had to rush to the defense of John Kerry.
“The New York Times” last Friday had a front-page story, trying to discredit all these other Vietnam veterans, some who’ve been wounded seriously, all of whom served honorably. And many were decorated. And they’re cast as a bunch of liars or paid off by the Bush people. And that’s the kind of coverage you would get from the so-called mainstream media.
President Bush is going to go out and rebut this, for the most part, with paid advertising. He doesn’t have “The New York Times” every day. If you added up the value of all “The New York Times” propaganda, it would probably be $3 or $4 million.

Let’s see… of the states where I could potentially vote, which one is closest in the most recent polls?
Indiana: Bush by 19%
Arizona: Bush by 8%
Connecticut: Kerry by 7%
Maybe I should stay registered in the Nutmeg State after all!
P.S. On the other hand, if I’m looking for an interesting race for statewide office, Indiana would be the place to vote. All three states have senatorial races, but Sens. Bayh, McCain and Dodd are all shoo-ins for re-election. Indiana, however, also has a race for governor — and it’s a doozy.

“Oh, Shrub, I really don’t feel so well!”
This has been your Extremely Obscure Torts Reference of the day.
P.S. Attention ladies: If a guy named Richard Roe propositions you, say no. :)

It’s official: My mom just formally converted to Judaism. She reports via e-mail:
I’m back from my appearance before the Bet Din, and from my mikveh. Now at last I don’t have to explain anymore why I support Yiddish Theatre and sing Yiddish music, because now it becomes logical. I am a Jew.
Congrats, Mom!
UPDATE: The Mom & Dad blog has more.

The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Misty May (which is such a porn-star name) and Kerri Walsh won the gold medal yesterday.
I was going to wait and let our esteemed Santa Monica correspondent and volleyball beat reporter, Kristy, post about this, because she has a personal story to tell about Walsh. But — sorry, Kristy — I just couldn’t wait any longer to post these photos:
Hehe. :)

Anyone who hasn’t been living in a cave on Mars has probably noticed by now that the Olympics have been filled with enough controversy to rival a political campaign.
No where has this been more readily apparent than in gymnastics competition (Links here here here here here and here just to name a few) and it has brought out the best and the worst of people.
Nowhere is this better highlighted than in Russia’s two star gymnasts Svetlana Khorkena and Aleksei Nemov.
Svetlana’s stinging accusations that the womens competition were rigged was pretty embarassing, not to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) or the Inernational Olympic Commitee (IOC) but to herself. All it did was make her look like the worlds biggest sore loser. This was only underscored by her poor performance in later events. Like Ralph Nader she is allowing her past successes to be overshadowed by her outrageous ego.
Contrast this to Aleksei Nemov. Considered a role model and icon in men’s gymnastics his performance in the mens high bar was amazing but the score handed down by the judges was shockingly low. The commentators were amazed, even the audience was appauled, booing the judges and cheering for Nemov for over 10 minutes. Finally the crowd was quieted by Nemov in order to allow Paul Hamm to perform his routine, which after being iced for 10 minutes was good enough to net him another medal.
I think its safe to say that the gymnastics competitions in Beijing four years from now might be the least controversy filled. That is if the FIG can manage to fix what seems to be a very broken system.
